Why do you suppose Natalie was able to stalk Gwen for eight years, but Gwen never picked up on her presence?

I questioned this, too. It seemed a little far fetched to me. It’s difficult to be that unaware of your surroundings

I agree with Rebecca. Certainly she should have noticed the car always parked close by.

I think Gwen felt safe with both of her parents in prison and she let her guard down. She fell into a routine and mundane lifestyle and she wasn’t necessarily happy but settled.

I agree. This was the biggest shocker of the book.i find it hard to believe that Gwen would have missed being stalked. That being said, it was also the biggest plot twist, so kudos to the author for that surprise. BUT not too realistic.

Good thinking. Maybe she was so busy hiding that she never noticed being watched.

Natalie was careful, patient, and she studied Gwen’s routines, and habits obsessively. I don’t think Gwen was expecting it, and she was focused on her own life, relationships, etc. Any signs that may have been there went undetected by Gwen.

I agree with you Jill, Natalie was patient and careful, always changing her way to follow. Gwen was feeling safer and safer as she progressed into adulthood. She also keep a very closed life which I think made it easier for Natalie to follow her. Natalie knew her daily routine.

I thought that was rather odd. Gwen was to aware for that to happen.

I considered this one of the weak points of the book, unbelieveable to me that someone could or would do that for 8 years.

I also considered this a weakness in the book. Not only does it seem unlikely that she would continued these actions for eight years but I did not find it plausible that someone with the bit of paranoia that Gwen had would not have noticed her at some point.

I think Gwen should have noticed. She was a cautious person and was probably always on the lookout for something suspicious.

I didn’t think she had reason to think anyone was watching her until she received the body parts. At that point, I would have thought she would have paid more attention.

I really don’t understand why she stalked her and never approached her. Did I miss something??

This does not seem to fit. Gwen was the type of person who would not have ever let her guard down. I don’t think that it made sense given her character or the story itself.

As Mari_A, Jill, and Carol_N wrote, I think Gwen wasn’t anticipating this (at least until she started receiving arms at her door), and Natalie had what it took to be a good stalker. Most of us don’t have that ability, but it became her main focus.
