Which of the plot twists did you see coming, and which surprised you the most?
It was pretty clear to me that Thirza had fallen in love with Dulci’s lover. Saw that one from a mile away.
I expected the ending, that Billy was going to show up at some point. But there were other twists that I didn’t expect at all and was pretty shocked by (e.g., that Dulcie and Thirza shared the same lover, and that Emilio was Billy’s father, although I did suspect that Piers wasn’t Billy’s father
Like Patricia M I figured out Emilio was both Dulcie’s and Thriza’s lover. That made me wonder if Billy might also be his child.
I agree with Patricia. I also knew he was Billy’s father. I was surprised that Billy ended up in America.
Like Paula I was surprised Billy turned up in America - glad he had a wonderful adoptive family
I agree with previous responses. I didn’t anticipate Billy’s return on the big wedding day. This must have been orchestrated by Columbine. I think she knew more about Billy sooner, but Jefferies chose not to develop that plot line.
I figured Billy to be alive somewhere in Italy. Plot was predictable.

I did not see Dulcie and Thirza being involved with the same man. Though, I did immediately understand that he was Billy’s father. I knew from the beginning that Piers was not Billy’s father.
From the summary of the book, I knew that they wouldn’t find Billy. So, that ruined the beginning of the book for me. I wished I hadn’t known that! It felt like useless reading at that point then it got really good with the love triangle. That kinda blew my mind lol! I did always feel that Billy was going to show back up though.
Well yes there were some clues to some kind of knowledge of Dulcie on the part of Emilio when he seemed so shocked by Thirza’s revelation as to who she was. I suspected that when he just kept avoiding telling her that he must have been the lover her mother’s letters referred to. I was not surprised that she had become pregnant. That seemed necessary to move the plot forward. I too suspected that Billy was going to appear at some point.
I guess the part that surprised me the most was when Dulcie caught Thirza and Emilio in the boathouse. I knew that when she finally came to visit later, Emilio would show up.
I knew that Billy would eventually turn up, but did not expect it to be at his sister’s wedding. I was surprised that Penelope was pregnant. I had assumed that she was out of her child bearing years.
Like Thirza, I was suspicious of Penny at first and was surprised when she turned out to be a really good person.
I knew Billy was alive all along when the didn’t find his body.. I was more surprised about Dulcie’s relationship with Emilio
I thought the only reason Emilio was introduced so early in the story had more significance than jsut some lover. we had no reason to wonder then about her marriage to Piers…turns out Emilio did have a big role in the story. I thought it so odd that the author brought that in so soon. So there was a reason!
I didn’t expect mother and daughter to have the same lover, I guess I am old fashioned like that

I knew Billy would return, but didn’t expect it to be so melodramatic. I thought Emilio was Dulcie’s lover, but didn’t expect her to discover Emilio and Thirza in bed together. Thirza’s pregnancy was expected, but I was surprised by Penny’s pregnancy. I must have missed the fact that she was much younger than I pictured her.
I was very surprised that the daughter was having an affair with the same man that fathered her little brother. Wow! That was a twist.
