When Mebel and Alain begin their affair, both are still married but living separately from their spouses. What was your opinion of Alain, and of their relationship? Did you suspect his true character before Gemma spilled the beans?

I really liked Alain. Their relationship did not bother me. They were both separated and they had a sweet relationship. I was so upset about him and what he did. I wanted Mebel to have some happiness - not that she needs a man for that - but he was kind and thoughtful to her.

I sort of had my suspicions, but was happy Mebel had some happiness for a bit.

I was upset the way it ended, but Mabel carried on.

I didn’t like Mebel’s husband, but I also thought she could do WAY better than Alain, too. I was hoping she wouldn’t go down that path, but I guess it was necessary for her journey.

At first I just thought Alain was a typical smooth talking French man who enjoyed beautiful women and sex. I think it was important for Mebel to experience enjoyable sex, to see that a relationship also involved being touched and complimented and listened to. I figured that he probably had relationships all over the place, but that there was a long list of women, students, and employees who he had blacklisted for rebuffing him - that was a surprise. Also, the contract that stated he would effectively own the creativity of those chefs working in his restaurants … definitely a selfish, arrogant, manipulative man.

In regards, to Alain’s relationship with Mebel, I was not concerned for her as she was a consenting adult, albeit a bit naive. I did think he might turn out to be a cad but was surprised and dismayed at the extent of his abuses.

I did not have a strong opinion about their relationship in the beginning other than being glad that Mebel was doing something that made her happy. It was nice to see her begin to recognize and prioritize herself and her desires. I did not expect that Alain was a serial sexual harasser, but did suspect that there would be a negative aspect to his character.

I do agree with this comment. I was hoping that Mabel could find happiness with Alain, even if it was briefly. Henk was terrible to Mabel, Sammy was not a respectful son or husband, and Alain knew how to play the game. Mebel did learn some life lessons from all of this and was ready for her next adventure. Somehow, I think that she is going to be a great chef. Maybe she and Gemma will open a restaurant together. Wouldn’t that be a great place to eat?

The restaurant would probably have many fans because Gemma knows how to use social media!!!

This was the first time Mebel had stepped out of her Chinese-Indo cultural “norms” and, unfortunately, right into the arms of a playboy. I’m glad she got to experience the thrill of the affair, but I’m sad that she got burned. There was no way she could have known such a situation could occur. She was completely naive in that respect. I’m just glad Alain didn’t turn out to be one of those gigolos who drain wealthy women’s bank accounts before moving on. I really thought that was where the plot was heading. Either way, he really needed to be taught a few lessons!
