What book or books are you reading this week? We’d love to know!
I finished Wandering Stars earlier this week and just started Dream Count. Well, I kinda started Dream Count, LOL. I often read in bed, and I think I got one paragraph in before my Kindle dropped out of my hands.
In audiobook format, I’ve started Book 2 of the Silo series (Shift). It talks about how the Silo came to be, and its early days. I think I’m enjoying it even more than the first book.
I’m entering the treacherous plot pages of The Lion Women of Tehran. ** I expect to feel emotions that resonate with aspects of today’s rights of women.
Just about finished with “The Briar Club” by Kate Quinn. It’s a long read, I am enjoying it immensely. Next is “The Antidote” by Karen Russell (ARC book)
I’m reading and loving Good Dirt by Charmaine Wilkerson and finally reading Pachinko by Min Jin Lee - great book! Im also starting Mythos by Stephen Fry. I’ve taken an interest in Greek Mythology. I never had much in school.
@user1 I’m looking forward to what you think of Mythos. It’s been on my radar for a while but I haven’t pulled the trigger yet. Like you, I have and interest in Greek Mythology, plus I love Stephen Fry (and have since his days w/ Hugh Laurie).
I finished “Mask of the Deer Woman” by Laurie L. Dove (took a bit to get into it but overall a good debut novel) and needing a palate cleanser from it & the news, started “Murders in Great Diddling” by Katarina Bivald. I need a nice English mystery & think this will do nicely.
I just started Prophet Song by Paul Lynch - a dystopian novel about a country moving into authoritarianism. It is beautifully written but terrifying.
I hope to have “James” finished by Monday. Next in the stack I must decide between Newbery winner “The First State of Being” or “Small Rain.”
I loved Prophet Song. It was a tough read, though.
I like dystopian fiction so will add this title to my reading list.
Nan:
It is a beautifully written book - subject matter is “intense” but absolutely worth it. When I am not reading I am thinking about it.
I have just started Dream Count. I’ve been reading in fits and starts but hope to settle into it this weekend.
I too thought Prophet Song was amazing and perhaps a bit too prescient.
I’m reading the Wedding People by Alison Espach. So far very enjoyable and quite a few laughable moments.
I just finished The Lion Women of Tehran. Engaging read.
And you made an interesting comment about rights and what you are anticipating. I felt like a lot of the discussion with regards to rights, and loss of, could apply to the US today.
I am finishing up The Familiar (Leigh Bardugo) and Blue Light Hours (Bruna Dantas Lobato) so that I can jump into my Black History month reading. Also, just finished The Fated Sky, the second in The Lady Astronaut series.
I’ll look forward to following your Black History Month choices @Gabi_J. I have quite a few lined up that I hope to get through.
The first two in my queue are Lovely One and The Swans of Harlem. Also, considering Good Dirt, Kindred, The Message, and a classic. Any ideas for a classic(s)? I have read Their Eyes Were Watching God and Passing. Loved them both.
Some of my favorites from past years: The Other Wes Moore, Don’t Cry for Me, A Most Beautiful Thing, and Bud, Not Buddy (a beautiful children’s book). And if I go outside the US, there are soooo many great ones.
What is on your list?
Hey, @Gabi_J I hope you’ll put The Bluest Eye on your list. We’ll be discussing it starting next week & we’d love to have you join us.
I read Kindred and thought it was excellent.
A more recent book that impressed me is The Love Songs of W.E.B. Du Bois by Honorée Fannone Jeffers: Summary and Reviews. The page count is high, but the book doesn’t feel long, and it’s definitely worth your time.
