What are your reading this week? (12-12-2024)

What book or books are you reading this week? Please share! We’d love to know.

I finished Babylonia, by Costanza Casati yesterday for the upcoming BookBrowse discussion. I thought it was much stronger than her previous book, Clytemnestra, and I’m looking forward to having a chance to talk about it with others.

Next up is Let’s Call Her Barbie, also for a BookBrowse discussion. This is a fictionalized account of the creation of the Barbie doll. I’ve only read the jacket so far, but I’m already intrigued. It says that until Barbie was created, the only dolls for little girls were baby dolls, preparing them for motherhood. Barbie was the first doll created as an adult, with a fashionable wardrobe and such, allowing children to imagine an adult life that was something other than parenthood.

In audiobook format, I’m on my last (for now) Slough House book. I’m not sure what I’ll queue up next. Recently two other series that I’ve completed added a book (Ballard & Bosch series, Expeditionary Force series) so I’ll likely tackle one of them.

I am reading The Dream Hotel. It explores the seductive nature of technology, which puts us in shackles even as it makes our lives easier. I’m giving it a go.

Currently reading This Strange Eventful History by Claire Messud. I heard her speak recently and immediately put this on my want-to-read list. It’s beautifully written about a family across at least three generations (all I’ve met so far, half-way through the book) and several continents.

Oh, @Cheryl_Winter, very curious about The Dream Hotel. I was offered a free copy of it, but haven’t taken the publisher up on it because it sounded a little bit “out there.” Let us know what you think once you’re done.

Just started Lenny Marks Gets Away with Murder* by Kerryn Mayne. Lenny has a unique personality. She’s a loner yet manages to teach fifth grade. She had a troubled childhood, which is just unfolding in the story.
