Hey, @Elizabeth, I’m going to defer answering your question in depth until after the discussion opens, if that’s OK. I’m afraid it’ll spark a conversation in this thread when I’m hoping to keep it mostly confined to the actual book discussion thread. Hope you don’t mind! But I will tell you that it was worth a read and it left me feeling good about life.
God of the Woods is in my top 5 for the year (out of 53 o4 54)
Clear is so so good!
I just finished ‘The Serviceberry: Abundance and Reciprocity in the Natural World’ by Robin Wall Kimmerer. Perfect short read for this season of giving.
Now reading The Spinning Heart by Donal Ryan (I seem to have a thing for Irish authors this year)
@Cheryl_Winter we’re also reading The Dream Hotel for First Impressions, please let us know what you think by reviewing it you’d like!
I finished my pairing of Huck Finn by Mark Twain and James by Percival Everett. I think they make a very interesting pairing and would recommend anyone read them both in close proximity. In my head I expected James to follow the plot of Huck Finn more closely and was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t.
Up now is The Californians which is already a quite different read.
The Dream Hotel is an interesting read. It kind of reminds me of The Circle but updated. James is our February book club read and I am looking forward to it. My next read is The Lion Women of Tehran. I love this book format!
I just finished There are Rivers in the sky by Elif Shafak. She is such a lyrical writer. I will never think of a drop of water so casually again. Her first book was also a wonder. Currently reading Richard Powers book Playground. Another examination of the wondrous diverse life of the oceans.
Thank you!!
Looking forward to your thoughts.
Agree with you about Irish lit. Two of my favorites: Trespasses by Louise Kennedy and Night Swimmers by Roisin Macguire.
I’ve read Trepasses, but not Night Swimmers (will look for it.) I discovered Niall Williams in the last few months, and cannot recommend Time of the Child highly enough!
Night Swimmers is publishing in US soon. I just finished Time of the Child. I’m now reading Shadowplay by Joseph O’Connor that my Irish friend recommended. It is a fictionalized version of Bram Stoker’s life.
I just borrowed Night Swimmers from one of our local libraries. I use Libby and have four libraries to chose from! Will start once I finish The Spinning Heart and me re-read of Small Things Like These. Thank you for the recommendation! Next, I have to visit Ireland!
I’m currently reading Five Bad Deeds by Caz Frear. I’m only about 12% in, but so far, I’m intrigued by the mystery and the way the story is setting up the characters and plot. Looking forward to seeing where it goes!
I’m currently reading Songs of Summer as part of the first impression program. I’m enjoying it so far as a fun read.
Interested to hear what you think of this one once you’re further along, @Terry_M!
I’ve read The Eyes and the Impossible to my grandchildren who all fell in love with Johannes and so many creatures in the park. Such a wonderful recipient of the Newberry Award!
I love it so far and cannot wait to share it with my 9 year-old!
I’ve been getting through Dante’s Divine Comedy since beginning of October! Finally passed the mid-way. It’s a difficult read but I gotta say I’ve been enjoying it.
I’m also finishing up “In our Midst” by Nancy Jensen, and have just started “The greatest lie of all” by Jillian Cantor. Both books are excellent so far.
I recently read this book, it’s really good! Yes, Lenny’s character is very quirky and unique, which is what I liked about this book the most - it’s not your typical character. Enjoy the rest of the book!
I recently read God of the woods for a book club - it was a really good book! I hope you enjoy it too!
