What are you reading this week? Please share! We’d love to know.
Rules of Civility I read all his books except this one. I think it is his best!
I got a rec here a week or two ago and read the Offing by Benjamin Myers and absolutely LOVED it! I would never have found this gem otherwise. I picked up another one at the library by Myers (has to do with crop circles, 1989 in UK) The Perfect Golden Circle. I had to DNF the 3rd from last Gamache story (World of Curiosities) because of psychopath and child sexual abuse in the story line. I had to read plot summary (like Sparknotes) to get it to conclude and get it out of my head. I hope The Grey Wolf and upcoming Black Wolf don’t have those very dark themes, as I LOVE Gamache! I just started (NF) The Shepherd’s Life by Rebanks (sheep farming in the Lake District UK) and Water Witches by Bohjalian (author of Midwives) in audio.
I love his books, I read the Gentleman in Moscow twice, paper and audio.
I’m one of the recent readers of The Offing based on the reviews of other Book Browse members. I also loved it! Now I’m in search of Myers’ backlist. The only other book of his in our local library is The Perfect Golden Circle. It’s on my nightstand now. I’ll be curious to know how you like it. Not sure about crop circles!
I finished Wild Dark Shores this morning and started Don’t Let the Devil Ride this afternoon. ****
I just finished “Lloyd McNeil’s Last Ride” by Will Leitch which turned out to be quite the dark horse since I grabbed it off the library’s New Book shelves on a whim. Very moving, keep the Kleenex handy. Now I’m eagerly awaiting a phone call to tell me that Adriana Trigiani’s “View From Lake Como” has been returned since I’m next on the list (it’s due back tomorrow!). After reading others’ posts, I think I’ll have to put “Perfect Golden Circle” on my TBR list.
Just finished The Safekeep this evening. Will be a bit before I will take it all in. Definitely 5 stars.
Oh I loved the Offing so much! I have the Perfect Golden Circle checked out through Libby, hope to get to it before it comes due!
I also got an inter-library loan of Cuddy (physical book) through my library system - but alas it’s a long book and not sure I will get to it. It came from halfway across the country. (may have to bow down to Amazon for this one)
The Offing will definitely be in my top 5 this year!
I don’t know why The Offing isn’t available for Kindle! Grrrr…
The Place of Tides by James Rebanks. Such beautifully written quiet book. It will easily be among my favorite books this years. Also, the audiobook is wonderful - recommend.
I am reading Fox by Joyce Carol Oates. It is about a pedophile but don’t let that scare you away. It is so well written. Oates gets into the depth of the character as well as how such a personality can manipulate the adults that knew him. This is a real page turner.
I’ve just begun Lula Dean’s Little Library of Banned Books by Kirsten Miller for one of my book clubs. I’m listening to All the Pretty Horses by Cormac McCarthy.
Such a special book!
I was able to order the paperback on Amazon.
Just started Anything for Billy by Larry McMurtry. Picked it because I needed to read a book because I wanted to, not because I had to and the Old West is my most favorite setting. Just finishing the audiobook of The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver and have really enjoyed the story and the narrator. Then will go back to the audiobook of Candide by Voltaire. I have no idea what to think of what I’ve already listened to. It’s so different.
I also tried to find Cuddy but no luck so far. Inter-library loan is my next step. I’ll look forward to seeing your post and comments if you get to it. Our library did have Perfect Golden Circle and I hope to start it later this week.
I finished “Demon Copperhead” this morning and started the Newbery Medal winner, “The First State of Being.” As an act of aggression, the author explains what Y2K was on the first page. That is enough out of you.
