What book or books are you reading this week? Please share! We’d love to know.
In the past week I’ve read (and loved) both ‘Austen at Sea’ by Natalie Jenner (perfect for Austin lovers, coming May 6) and ‘Tilt’ by Emma Pattee (this was a wild, wild ride!) Right now I’m reading ‘The Painted Veil’ by W. Somerset Maugham, turns 100 years old this year. Time to read some of the classics I’ve missed!
I am reading Together Tea. I finished The Lion Women of Tehran and enjoyed it.
Still reading Miss Austen by Gill Hornby in preparation for PBS Masterpiece series by same name. Certainly hope the series is better than the book. It’s been extremely slow going for me.
Listening to the last third of Barkskins by Anne Proulx. I started the book months ago and had to lay it down so thought I would try the audiobook to finish it. Haven’t found it to be as good as her other books.
I certainly seem to be a Negative Nellie today!
Thank you Bookbrowse hive mind for suggesting Raising Hare. Just finished this beautiful book about the thoughtful interaction of humans with the natural world. Cooperation instead of destruction. Also finished -The Family Recipe about the resettlement of Vietnamese fishermen in Louisiana in the late seventies and the trauma that
results from the treatment of immigrants as other impacting the next generation with dysfunction and pain.
I’m reading an upcoming release, The Names by Florence Knapp, and then I’ll be moving on to The Girls of Good Fortune by Kristina McMorris and Lies and Weddings by Kevin Kwan. Both of those are for upcoming book club discussions. Since those both open on May 15, I’m not sure which one I’ll read first.
In audiobook format, I’m FINALLY getting around to my Huck Finn/James combo. I’m about a quarter of the way through the first, where Jim & Huck meet up on the island. I don’t know that I’d be continuing (it’s not holding my interest, plus the language constantly makes me cringe) but I’d like the background before listening to James.
I loved The Lion Women of Tehran!
I loved James but I hear that the audiobook is an even better experience.
I am reading “The Frozen River” and enjoying it. The bedside table has “The First State of Being,” “There are Rivers in the Sky,” and “The Postcard” from which to choose.
Thanks, @Anthony_Conty! Good to know!
I listened to a video podcast with the author. A very interesting woman.
Which author, @Cheryl_Winter? I’m currently trying to round up more authors for our Q&A sessions, and it sounds like she might be a good one to hit up.
The author is Marjan Kamali for Together Tea and The Lion Women of Tehran. She also wrote The Stationary Shop but I haven’t read that one yet.
I am reading Matias Faldbakken’s The Waiter and am really enjoying it - illustrative descriptions and subtle humor. Translation from Norwegian is brilliantly done.
If you need a plot, this book is not for you.
On recommendations from both my son and daughter, I’m reading THE ROSE CODE by Kate
Quinn. So far, so good.
I just finished Black Woods Blue Sky, by Eowyn Ivey. Mixed feelings.
I am reading Heartwood.
The Frozen River is SO good! Hope you liked it.
Katie Kitamura’s Audition. Finally got from my hold’s list at the library.
Just finished Happy Land by Dolen Perkins-Valdez and really enjoyed it ! The writing is beautiful and the story (based on true events) is superbly portrayed.
