I just finished The Busybody Book Club whose discussion opens on the 22nd. I found it pretty formulaic, but an adequate page turner.
All very excellent books and highly recommended, especially Lessons in Chemistry, Story of my life, and the Assistant - and in that order.
Raising Hare is wonderful!
Finished the Painted Veil by M. Somerset Maugham (published 100 years ago!) and now reading My Name Is Emilia del Valle by Isabel (loving it so far)
Could you say more? It’s in my TBR and want to know if I should move up or down, thank you!
Have you ever reached out to Natalie Jenner (Jane Austen Society, Bloomsbury Girls, Austen at Sea) - she is very responsive on Instagram!
I’ve begun “The Great Divide” by Christina Henriquez, a novel of the creation of the Panama Canal. (Reviewed in BookBrowse.)
Just turning the cover on “Men Who Hate Women” by Laura Bates. (Reviewed in BookBrowse.)
Also working chapter by chapter on “Forgeries and Counterforgeries”, a scholarly work by Bart Ehrman.
I’m reading Beautiful Ugly by Alice Feeney, it’s a page-turner for sure!
I’m just this minute starting Lies and Weddings by Kevin Kwan.
And then I’m going to launch straight into James without reviewing Huck Finn. I get to meet Percival Everett at an event soon, so I will probably follow up James with The Trees, which I’ve had on my TBR since 2021.
People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks. The book has an interesting story but I’m struggling to get through it.
Hi Evonne, I am so excited for Austen at Sea. I like the author and love Austen, so this is for me.
I read my first Somerset Maugham book this year, the Razor’s Edge. It was so good.
Thanks for posting.
Kim.kovacs, If you can, stick with Huck but maybe do an audio on a faster speed. I found it gave me a greater appreciation for James. My friends that did not read Huck did not enjoy James as much as I did. In fact, I just took a four week discussion class on James and Erasure. It was so powerful. It made me appreciate James even more.
I am reading On Earth We’re Briefly Gorgeous by Ocean Vuong. It is full of beautiful, lush prose but it is a very difficult, emotional read, with lots and lots of trigger warnings. Vuong has a new book out, but I had never read this one. I am also reading The Caretaker by Ron Rash, for my book club. I will be reading a nice easy read after these two tough books.
Happy Reading to All
Let me know what you think of Austen at Sea! And I will check out the Razor’s Edge, thanks for the recommendation.
The Caretaker is beautiful!
Hi:
I have read some good books the past few weeks that I would like to share.
I am currently reading THE GUEST COTTAGE by Lori Foster - it’s very uplifting.
Other books:
BEFORE DOROTHY by Hazel Gaynor - loved it - it is about Auntie Em before Dorothy arrived and when she arrived - Excellently done - totally enjoyable.
THE FAMINE ORPHANS by Patricia Falvey - based on a true historical event of sending women to Australia during the potato famine in Ireland.
THE SECRET HISTORY OF AUDREY JAMES by Heather Marshall - set during WWII - it’s about her life.
I have read many others, but those are standouts.
Looking forward to seeing what others have read.
Elizabeth
I just finished his latest, Emperor of Gladness. It was excellent!
@Elizabeth we’ll be holding a Before Dorothy in a few weeks. I’m glad to hear you enjoyed the book; I’m looking forward to it.
Thanks.
I will be there…June 12, correct?
