I just finished reading Small Things Like These by Claire Keegan. A little gem of a story! And I discovered it’s been made into a movie, so I went to see it at a local theater. Cillian Murphy plays the main character so well. And I was pleased the movie closely tied into the book.
I actually enjoyed it from the start so I may not be much help. The book does read more like fiction as the story unfolds.
I loved Project Hail Mary as well as Weir’s The Martian. I particularly enjoyed the audiobook format for both. I am not much of a sci-fi reader but this year stumbled onto Becky Chambers’ Monk and Robot series and Wayfarer series. Both series are what I would consider “light” sci-fi, not the gloom and doom.
Nothing better than an excellent series with a lot of books!
The Black Wolf will be out in 2025! I just started reading The Love Elixir of Augusta Stern. I think it will be a fun read, maybe!!
I’m not a big fan of NF, but The Wager was a big favorite of most of our book club. I found parts of it fascinating and other parts tediously detailed. Skim the dry parts.
Just finished We Solve Murders which was entertaining enough but not as compelling to me as the Thursday Murder Club series. Starting We’ll Prescribe You a Cat.
Congrats!!! I am floundering a bit around page 370. . .
I remember I wasn’t overly invested in the first book in the Thursday Murder Club series so I am hoping the same holds true for the We Solve Murder series. I will definitely read the second.
@Holly_Batsell & @Gabi_J, I’ve only read one book in each series. I think I preferred We Solve Murders to the Thursday Murder Club book; it was more madcap. Humor is such an individual thing, though.
@Paula_Walters I finished The Love Elixir of August Stern just last night. I did enjoy it; it was a nice, light read with great characters and some very funny scenes in the 1987 sections. I thought the author’s attention to detail in the 1920’s sections was excellent, too. She did a great job of framing the time period. My biggest gripe was the author’s reliance on coincidence to move the plot along (pet peeve of mine), but otherwise I did like the book.
So true about humor being personal. Do you like Benjamin Stevenson’s Everyone Has… series? It is another series I enjoy.
One comment about the Thursday Murder Club. Personally, I think the series has gotten better with every book in part because as the characters have been further developed I feel more invested.
I do need a light read right now so I think I will enjoy it!
Currently reading Colored Television by Danzy Senna - highly recommend it!
I am currently reading The Perfect Wife by Jeneva Rose… It is listed as a mystery. I hope it is good because I just finished In Our Midst and it is one of the best books I have read this year.
Just finished An Astronomer in Love by Antoine Laurain. It’s a quick, but delightful, read involving two time periods—and two fascinating characters who I found completely captivating. Laurain is an astute observer who captures the positive without being sappy or trite. Good counterbalance if you are feeling depressed by the current news reports.
I loved this book too and suggested that Book Browse should list it (but they didn’t). It gave me the best sense of the majesty, danger and beauty of the Grand Canyon, I learned so much about the geology, the Native Americans who reside there (and the awful treatment they endured) and how fragile the environment is. It’s a great adventure story too—an absolute page-turner. I think anyone would enjoy reading it. It also reminded me that we must be vigilant in making sure this iconic landscape is preserved.
I just read a blurb about this book - looks delightful. Thank you for the recommendation.
Hi Roberta, the good news is that for our tech roadmap in 2025 we’re planning to enable members to add books to BookBrowse via their reading list!
I know, it is a long read! Keep going, it is worth it! Best of Luck.
