What are you reading this week? (11/14/2024)

I’m reading Dinners with Ruth by Nina Tottenberg. It’s her memoir of sorts with frequent references to her friendship with Ruth Bader Ginsberg. It’s a good read with insights into both Nina’s career at NPR and the Supreme Court.

This book is on my list. Interested to see how you enjoyed it.

I loved The Wager. It is one of my favorite books this year. I understand it’s going to be made in not a movie as well.

@Anne_Glasgow that’s my experience as well.

Demon Copperhead is great. I’m glad you got off to a good start with it.

It’s a little dry, imo. I’d say it does get better when you start to learn about what happens to the sailors.

OMG Candace, I loved The Oceans and the Stars. A beautiful military story. I have read other Helprin books but this seems maybe the most commercially appealing.

i usually love his writing, but i couldn’t get through it. possible because i was listening?

I am reading Dogs and Monsters by Mark Haddon. It is short stories - some are retelling of Greek mythology, and the stories are utterly fascinating.

I read the Grey Wolf. I enjoyed it but like you it was not my favorite. I believe the Black Wolf is coming out in 2025n not sure if that is true or not. Before that I read Somewhere Beyond the Sea by Tj Klune. Loved it!

I’m reading “The Berry Pickers.” Very good read.

I just completed The Berry Pickers and The Jane Austin Society. Currently, I am reading titles from the distant past that I missed, Christy and Howards End. I’m making a conscious effort to read titles that have been off the radar for a very long time, but are such good reads.

Ok, here’s my best answer to your question, Kim. He should read both. The Emerald Mile is more high intensity excitement and is a total thrill ride. It’s been some years since I read it so I don’t recall much nuance.

A Walk in the Park is much more comprehensive and reflective. It covers plants, wildlife, rock structures, hardship, friendship, relations with the tribal nations and so much more. I think this trip affected Fedarko in a more profound way than the river trip. It has moments of cliff hanging danger and other times of meditative quiet.

I loved them both for many differing reasons.

Thanks yet again, @Anne_Glasgow! I’ll start him on The Emerald Mile and see how that goes.

I am finishing the most amazing collection of essays by Joe Schartz from McGill U in Montreal. He writes essays for newsletter and blogs and talks. It is the only chemistry I have ever really ENJOYED reading and understand easily. Any of his books are good, am finishing “…silkworms and Spandex” with great witticisms also.

I’m reading Triptych, the first book in the Will Trent series by Karin Slaughter. I saw the tv series and was intrigued. The book is much better and has great character development. I love series books because I hate when a great book is marked “Finished.” This series has 12 books! Highly recommend!

Finished two great books - LAST TWILIGHT IN PARIS by Pam Jenoff and THE GIRLS OF THE GLIMMER FACTORY by Jennifer Coburn.

Haven’t started anything new yet, but getting ready to read NOTHING EVER HAPPENS HERE by Seraphine Nova Glass.

Finally finished all 700+ pages of The Covenant of Water! Also finished Absolute Power by David Baldacci. Started Tyrannosaur Canyon by Douglas Preston. Trying to catch up on older reads to down size my library.

I just finished Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. Book club had a terrific discussion. I am almost finished listening to Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. The reader sounds like Tom Hanks (it isn’t) and I am absorbed in the science here. I don’t read much SF, loving this one.
