True confessions time: How many books do you own that you haven’t read yet?
Probably over 100.
too many. another question: so why do i keep buying more?
I just figured out that my Kindle app will give me exactly that information (Filter - Unread). 312. 312!!! And that doesn’t include the 50 or so I’ve had on my shelf for decades (I’ve switched almost entirely to ebooks). I obviously have a problem.
@Judith_Swartz a fellow reader I know calls that SBS (“Shiny Book Syndrome”).
More than 200. I don’t really want to know. And I’m still purchasing books that spark my interest.
23 print and 90 on my kindle- I prefer to read print books but if I see an interesting e-book for sale I have to snap it up .,
Oh, look at all you compulsive book buyers! It does my heart good!
I’VE FOUND MY TRIBE!
The thing is, if you don’t buy a really good-sounding book when you see it/hear about it, you forget, and then it feels like it’s gone forever. By impulse buying, you know you have it, and there’s always the hope that you’ll get to it some day.
I’m choosing to look at it as a sign of hope that I’ll be around long enough to get to 'em all.
I’m ashamed to say hundreds! Most came from our local Friends of the Library book sales, but many are from giveaways that I’ve entered. I rarely buy new books except ones that I will use over and over such as cookbooks, health and fitness, and other reference books.
Oh my…no idea. There are my physical shelves which I have really worked clear but then there are Kindle and Audible digital shelves.
I am so glad to find out that I am not the only one with multiple bookcases in multiple rooms filled with unread books.
In the past I challenged myself: for every purchase of books for me, I had to purchase an equal dollar value for kids reading programs. Maybe I need to do that again in 2025.
@Carol_Dirks what an awesome idea! Thanks for passing that along.
The Shiney Book Syndrome is very similar to all of those “shelf help” books!
Welcome to the BookBrowse community, Gloria! You’re gonna love it here.
I’m with you Gabi–Too many to realistically count. Sometimes I am haunted by them, but simultaneously comforted that they are here within my reach when the time comes to read them.
Nooooo–don’t be ashamed, Lana. Be proud that you seize every opportunity to give books a new home with you. I imagine them being very happy and patiently waiting their turn to be read.
50 most of which I acquired after I had purged all of my books!
I forgot about the books on my kindle, where there are probably 50 unread. I like that term Shiny Book Syndrome. I definitely have it! I do like to support our independent book stores.
The only books I buy are from Kindle. I buy three at a time, read or listen, delete, and buy three more. I am a retired librarian, so my career taught me the value of limited ownership. At one time I had over 1500 children’s book, but found non-profit children’s services for all except 20 of my absolute favorites.
