Overall, what did you think of The Moonshine Women? For what audience would you recommend the book? (no spoilers in this topic, please!)
Truly enjoyed this story, the family, the events and history of Prohibition. Easy, quick read because one can become totally engaged! Such wonderful writing.
I loved the setting in the Ozarks and how they navigated the ruggedness, danger and overall survival in this time period. The characters are complex and I may not have always agreed with their choices, but I certainly understood why they made the choices they did.
if you enjoy historical fiction with strong and complicated female characters I think you will like this. If you enjoy stories set during Prohibition and the hidden operations that were created because of it. Or, if the portrayal of resilient women in a harsh world appeals to you, you may like this.
I very much enjoyed The Moonshine Women! The complex characters were developed beautifully and this is perhaps what I enjoyed most. The setting in the Ozarks (the flora, fauna and passing seasons) was so wonderfully described, that I felt transported there. This book grabbed me, right in the first chapter and continued to capture my interest.
This book would appeal to anyone who enjoys historical fiction and exciting plots!
I enjoyed reading about the Ozark Mountains as a setting. Books I have read before about the Prohibition period have always been in big cities. I never thought about this as a setting. I so appreciate when my world is expanded!
I think book clubs that like strong interesting female characters and historical fiction would enjoy this book.
I thought I’d like this book a reasonable amount. I wasn’t prepared to get completely invested and love it so much, but that indeed is what happened. The writing was beautiful with vivid imagery, and the storytelling evoked so many emotions.
I had lots of fun reading this book because it takes place right in my neck of the woods. I’ve spent many days roaming the bath houses and hotels in Hot Springs and felt right at home with Shine and Rebecca down there. It is a fascinating place to visit. As a resident of Northwest Arkansas, Missouri is just across the county line and folks still head north for alcohol sales on Sunday (thanks to blue laws still on the books). I have recommended this book to my club which is composed of men and women “of a certain age” who will feel as connected as I did. There’s something for everyone in this one!
I could not have said it better, Emily. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! I was impressed with the quality of the descriptions of each scene as well as the depth of getting to “know” each character as though I lived in the various communities. There is a little bit of everything for a great book club discussion.
I gave the book 4 stars. I thought it was really good! I loved the setting, I absolutely loved the characters and I loved the appearance of real life people in the story. I loved the relationships the characters had with each other.
I enjoyed Moonshine Women. Beautiful story of sisterhood, family and survival in the Ozarks during Prohibition. Highly recommend.
At first, I wasn’t sure I’d like the book. I kind of went along for the ride to see if it got better. And I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this book! Before I knew it, I was 2/3 into it and was invested in the characters. I would recommend this book to readers of historical and women’s fiction.
I really enjoyed the book. I got it a few days before the discussion opened and rushed through it. I think I’ll read it again at a slower pace since I found the characters exciting and different from each other.
Yes, I agree that book clubs with an emphasis on historical fiction and strong characters will enjoy this book.
I enjoyed this novel. I have read other set in this time period, but this is the first that focused on the women’s role in making and selling moonshine. I think most readers will enjoy this quick read that is a good mix of historical facts and interesting story.
I always enjoy books about sisters and about strong women and this book had both. I also enjoyed the setting in the Ozarks and the way that the sisters grew throughout the story. It was a 4 star read for me
I enjoyed this book very much. I enjoyed learning about moonshine. I thought it was very well written.
I loved the characters so much.
I am surprised how much I enjoyed the book. It is not a period that I have read much about. I tend to to choose historical set in the age of kings. War of the Roses and Elenor of Aquitaine are favorites. This is a newdirection for me to read in
“Moonshine Women” was a very pleasant surprise for me, despite each chapter featuring a difference character (I usually don’t care for that feature). I found myself much more invested in the characters than I expected, though some of the plot lines seemed a bit contrived. I enjoyed the location, living in southeast Kansas that was notorious for bootlegging during the same time period. I suspect many of the local stills were operated by women, many of whom needed to work after their miner husbands were killed or injured in explosions. I’m recommending it to friends who read historical fiction and/or strong female protagonists.
I loved this book. It was a great story about strong women. It was very well written.
I really loved this book and especially since it took place in the Ozark mountains where I am from and continue to live. I think it will be a great read for book clubs with lots of good discussion… a great historical fiction read with such great character development and good historical context. I gave it a 4 star review, but should really be rounded up to a 4.5.
