Do you use your local library? If so, what services do you take advantage of that your library offers? Why do you think libraries are important?
I have a library card and use it to get ebooks however after reading this book, I think I will stop by to see what it offers the community. I bet I will be pleasantly surprised.
I go to the library often. I love books and some of my favorite childhood memories are reading Nancy Drew on teh floor of our town library. It was there that I learned the library held a whole world of ideas! It made me think of places I had never been, people I never met.Libraries should be free to choose books for ALL readers. Our town library is having issues with people trying to censor the library and choose books they want on the shelves. That’s for your own personal library, not the PUBLIC library!
I am a volunteer and serve on our library board. I take great advantage of our audiobooks as well as printed books. I love to have stories read to me by great readers and they stick with me. I also run our book club and am always looking for great books to read and recommend. The Book Browse site is invaluable in this respect. One of our patrons is caring to her husband with early onset Alsheimers and comes to get puzzles out for him. She cannot come to our club but when I told her about the audiobooks she said it saved her sanity because they do not disturb him and she can enjoy listening while doing other things. She never knew audiobooks existed at the library.
I’m in the Library Friends Group and LOVE having “first dibs” on the books in our semi-annual book sales. I’m checking out fewer hardcover fiction, but always check the “This Just In” section. I love sitting in the comfy chairs and browsing the literary magazines, business journals, local history. I take full advantage of browsing Libby for audiobooks and ebooks. I often “cross-pollinate,” listening to a book and thinking “I need a copy of that book.” Sometimes, it works the other way around Lincoln in the Bardo or North Woods when I have to hear the voices. Libraries will save us during these uncertain times.
Yes, I love my local library. I go to educational programs they present and special events they hold,They sometimes hold contests which I participate in. I also lead a monthly book discussion for older ladies. I’ve done that for 20 years now. Libraries are a blessing!
Our local public library includes a Tool Library, which offers a variety of hand and power tools, as well as small cooking appliances, to residents for a one-week loan. It’s been a really great option for us—we just borrowed a hacksaw to cut our Christmas tree down so it could fit in our compost bin, for example, and when we were in the market for a waffle iron, we checked the Belgian waffle iron out from the library to see if we liked it (we did, and wound up buying the same model!). It’s a great way to save money on things you might need only once in a while. And of course, we check out lots of books and attend library programs, too!
Yes! Volunteers at our library will give out seeds / plants so sometimes we’ll take advantage of that, in addition to books of course.
Libraries are amazingly important not only because of the resources they provide, but because they provide them at little to no cost to patrons as well.
I use my local libraries all the time. I download books onto my Kindle, and since I live in NYS I also belong to the NY City public library. I browse and request books frequently from the library. I also use the facilities to meet with the person for whom I am a literacy tutor (ESL). In addition, I borrow free tickets for local museums and historic sites. My library also holds an annual book fair, and I always attend and purchase books. I also donate books I know I will not re-read. My local library is awesome!
I use my local library and have been a constant visitor to libraries since I was a child. Many years ago the library had a mobile unit called the Bookmobile. It would travel to different neighborhoods on different days. I used to pack a grocery bag full of books since the Bookmobile came every 3 weeks. Now I use my library not only for books, but to get help with my personal technology, visit the art gallery that is there, check on community classes or any happenings I might be interested in. So many reasons to go to your local library!
Even though I don’t use the Library often, they are valuable. They are free! Anyone can use the Library. As a child, in the summertime, I went to the Library every Saturday when my parents took their produce to the market. I would check out eight to ten books, and my mother and I would read them during the week after the chores were done. I would read late into the night.
I use the library as the main source of reading material. When I cared for my great grand daughter, I took her to story time and play time. Libraries are key to a community.
Yes, I use my public library. Libraries are important as repositories of information and enjoyment. They provide a place for everyone no matter how much money they have to read and learn. My library has book groups, computers and internet access available to all, “book bags” with multiple copies of books for book groups to borrow, author appearances, rooms available for groups of all kinds to use, language lessons, etc, etc.
Yes, I do use my local library. I borrow physical and digital books. I also have enjoyed some DVDs from their vast selection. Our library has had some wonderful speakers come in for various events that my family has enjoyed. Other services offered are discount passes to local museums and historical places, and a multitude of items and equipment that are available to borrow from electronics, games, hobbies, etc. Another perk that I love is that members can book a study or meeting room. I think libraries are essential not just for what they offer the community, but also because they bring the community together.
I use the library to download audiobooks all the time. Our libraries in the Cleveland area also there are a lot of authors that visit and talk about their new books. I’ve met many famous authors that way and have a wonderful signed book collection. They’ve also provided my kids with reference and test taking help over the years. I can’t imagine not have that resource available to me.
I have been a long time library user. The library is now so much more than books on a shelf. It’s a community gathering place. Mom’s come with toddlers for story hour and a chance to meet other moms. Wish they had that whne my kids were little! There is so much available at the library . There are those who want to censor what’s on the shelves for all of us, But libraries are for eveyone.
Most of the books I read come from the library, either borrowed or from their used book sales. I only read hard copies. I really like their online reservation system which helps me manage my daily reading. They also have wonderful in person author talks and musical performances, as well as community educational sessions on various topics of interest. Our director of library services is wonderful!! I live in Arlington, Virginia.
Yes, definitely. New books are so expensive and sometimes I just want to read the book from the library and take it back if I didn’t care for it. But, if it is a book I really like, I will purchase for my personal library. Also like the availability of video’s and reference books from the library. Libraries are extremely essential, especially for students to do research for school and to provide books for those less fortunate unable to buy books. When my grandchildren were young, Tuesday after school was library day! We would spend time looking at things and then out for afternoon snacks. Those were wonderful days!
