Did you see early red flags about Matthew and what might they be? I was skeptical of him from the start, and I never had much feeling for him.
I never saw red flags about Matthew. I thought it was Lily’s decision to dissolve their family and felt sorry for Matthew.
I didn’t see any red flags, really, but I agree that we don’t get to know him well. I understand why the author never included his perspective, but I do wish she had. Without knowing what was going on in his head, he seemed kind of shallow, and as a character, somewhat undeveloped. I think that is especially apparent because Lily, Nick and May are so three-dimensional.
I also didn’t see any “red flags” about Matthew. I also wish the author included Matthew’s perspective. I felt he was somewhat left out while being a significant character in the family’s dynamic.
I wanted to know so much more about Matthew. I felt that he would not let people know him very well and that he felt his family’s wealth may have contributed to his lack of openness. I felt Lily should not have told Nick that his father did not want him to contact him. Matthew seemed to want to be part of Lily’s and Nick’s lives, but couldn’t figure out how to do that. He seemed unable to develop the courage to move past his family of origin. For me, his response to Samuel’s death highlighted his lack of taking charge instead of holding back and resigning himself to his situation.
I agree with you. . . More Matthew. Why did he feel as he did?
Why didn’t try to mend bridges with Lily? I felt he wanted the relationship but did not have the ability to fight for it. I felt he really didn’t have much of a backbone or he would have plowed forward and secure his son in his life.
You have some interesting points.
