Why is it so difficult for there to be an American Village series filled with stock characters like this one. Susan Hill is another wonderful writer and she even gives you a map of the town! Often the American series revolve around one character, rather than many.
That’s an interesting question, @Margaret_S! I’m wracking my brain & I can’t think of any books that are similar that are set in the U.S. But it’s not my genre…What do others think? Are series set in the US out there that we’re just not thinking of?
I can’t think of any either. But Louise Penny’s series featuring Armand Gamache is set in the little village of Three Pines, Quebec Canada. The résidents as well as the village itself are also characters in the stories. (At least it’s on the same continent)
Haha, @Donna_D, that was the only “close” series I could think of, too.
Not a series but Stephen King does a pretty good job with It. He probably could have split the book into smaller chunks, but any fan of his work appreciates the convenience of one volume, it gives you an arm workout whenever you pick it up (for those who don’t use ebook or audio formats) 900 page in one volume is HEFTY. He develops the main characters and their social/familial circles but doesn’t overwhelm the reader with unnecessary backstory or trivial characters.
That does seem to be King’s specialty, setting horror in small US towns.
No cozy mystery series, though!
Rita Mae Brown does American cozy mysteries!
