Why do you think the author chose to begin adult Effie’s story stranded on a Scottish mountain? What does this scene illustrate about her character?
I think it was a pretty powerful way to set us Effie as a character - resilient, strong but still vulnerable.

I thought it was a very effective beginning, setting her up as a strong, independent, determined woman–but one with emotional issues.

I thought the beginning showed Effie as strong, resilient, independent, and capable in the outdoors. It also showed her limits which were pushed and tested throughout the book.
In addition to the previous comments, she also showed caring for others, putting them ahead of herself.

I agree with the others. It showed that she was strong, resilient, an outdoors person, and protective of others.
It should where Effie was at it terms of her life by starting the book that way. That was clever.
I think it illustrates that she is tough and that she has experienced the struggles of outdoor isolation.
Effie is independent and self sufficient. Almost a loner. She comes from a place of having to take control and provide for herself and others when needed. The author was letting us know that Effie could, and would, take the reigns in any situation and see the issue through to the end.
The author lets us know she can endure extreme circumstances protecting others in the process.
I thought it was a good place to start the story because we immediately leaned that Effie was strong and self reliant.
I think that starting the book this way did show a lot about her character. On top of what everyone else mentioned I think that it also showed how proud and stubborn she was. Afraid of looking foolish.
Well, I didn’t see any hidden significance to it. To me it’s just a good start. I mean, the story has to start somewhere, doesn’t it?
