Why do you think so much of the book is spent with the young women who weren’t part of Ivan’s initial story?

As I said in response to another question, the perspectives of the young women bring context and depth to the story, and illustrate through their experiences in the world and relationship with their mother the far-reaching impact of Ivan’s behavior even upon strangers he never had any idea existed. Silber was especially good at highlighting specific aspects of Ginger’s personality and experiences that further shed light on how what she observed for a few brief moments in that emergency room waiting room had a huge ripple effect, even for the next generation.
