Why do you think Emilie chose Miranda over Walker?
I can’t imagine any other choice. Miranda had lost her loving mother and sister. She had been abused by the people Walker left her with. Emilie didn’t have it in her to abandon the child in such desperate need. Additionally, Walker was really a scumbag despite his physical appeal to Emilie. It would have been out of character in my opinion. True, she made two disastrous marriages but eventually matured.
Miranda needed Emilie and Walker didn’t. I think Emilie needed Miranda’s love also. Emilie couldn’t depend on Walker and he further showed his true colors when he was angry Miranda was there.
I agree with Marcia!
Emile knows pain and abuse and I think she felt she had to help Miranda. As Marcia pointed out Walker showed who he really was.
She was shocked that Walker had sold the child to those horrible dirty people. When he showed up at the house and demanded she get rid of Miranda because she was part Indian of course Emilie chose this sweet girl who had been abused for four years over him.
Not even a choice, in my opinion!
Emilie always chose animals and people that had been mistreated. By this time, she realized that she and Walker were not a good match, and she was emboldened by his treatment of Miranda and his visceral reaction to seeing her, even after she learned that Miranda was not his daughter.
Emilie probably realized (at some level) that Walker could not find love in his heart (or time in his life) for the many children he had fathered; however, she seemed truly appalled by the extent of hatred he felt for the child who was not his biological child. And if that did not reveal his true colors, then nothing could possibly do so.
There were many aspects of Emilie that I could not relate to, but she did care about people and animals - it was not surprising that she welcomed Miranda and took good care of her. This was the part of Emilie that I loved. She knew from experience how important safety and stability was to a child, and she provided it for Miranda.
I think she instantly related to her especially seeing her tied up. It was as though she was freeing herself. She was having Walker’s child and to see how he treated another of his children why would she want him in the home?
I agree with the other responses that once Emilie saw Walker’s respone to Miranda, there was no chance she would pick him (a terrible person) over a innocent, defenseless, child. I was surprised she choose to marry him in the first place! She knew he was not a good kind man. She had really bad choices when it came to men.
It was an obvious choice when she saw how the poor girl had been neglected and abused and she should have gotten rid of that asshole Walker before this even happened.
