Why do you suppose the various characters – Monsieur Legrand, Nicole and Johnny, Geoff, and Edie herself, to name just a few – are so determined to save the bakery?

OMG, a good bakery is the soul of a neighborhood–growing up, I lived across the street from a commercial bread bakery and the smells in the early morning were mouth watering. But there were also two German Jewish bakeries in the neighborhood as well. Sunday morning–crusty rolls fresh baked after Mass and danish–Cushman’s for crumbcake and madelaines–oh, bagels. When I moved to Burlington Vt and there was no bakery open on Sunday morning I thought I’d moved to another planet. There is nothing like a good bakery in the neighborhood–it is even better than an Irish pub!

The bakery was the place to go for great bread etc. It is part of the neighborhood where friends and neighbors meet. Growing up there was a wonderful German bakery oh for great rye bread and a flakey hard roll.

It is a connection to the past and all that was lost because of the war. Saving the bakery was a way to reclaim the idyllic charm of the past and all the hopes and dreams that were lost.

The bakery was important to that village. They loved the food and the owners.

I find all family bakeries so inviting - this bakery is a lovely place and a wonderful component of the community. Some want to save it mainly for that. But I also agree it is a deeply touching connection to the past and the “family” that developed it.

They all have a passion to do the RIGHT thing and they are honest.

Mon. Legrand, Nicole, Johnny, and Geoff are lovers of traditional ways, culture, nature. If the option is between saving a charming neighborhood bakery or converting to a metal and glass modern building, charm will always win out. They, plus Edie herself, have a love of history, Nicole, Johnny and Edie love old-time music. Geoff introduces visitors to the cultural and historic features of the town. Mon. Legrand wants to keep support the charm of the local area.

The bakery was a longstanding tradition. It was a gathering place for the community. They also loved the pastries and bread.

I agree with you. I think it is sad that so many bakeries in the United States have disappeared. I am fortunate to have one in my neighborhood; however, I lived in a small town for a few years and the two neighborhood bakeries that existed simply disappeared. Sad.
