Why do you suppose Niamh was so surprised – and even disbelieving – when others mentioned her parents’ belief in her talent?
Either she never heard their sincerity or else she doubted them…and herself.
She lacked confidence and was insecure about her talents. Too much listening to the self-doubt conversation in her head.
I think Niamh suffered from anxiety and depression which leads to a lot of self doubt. Even if others say she is fine she is not able to believe them as her own subconscious states she is not ok.
Niamh was insecure and didn’t believe in herself. She seemed to believe she was a disappointment to her mother, especially and that tune was on a continuous loop in her head.
Niamh definitely had insecurities! She probably suffered, as others have commented, from anxiety and/or depression. Hopefully, this experience with Leah helped her to believe in herself and gain confidence, plus hopefully she will get some help as I know from experience with anxiety that medication can really help.
Niamh has an unrealistic view of herself and her own talents. Her anxiety and depression allow her to continually compare herself unfavorably to others. This makes it impossible for her to accept sincere compliments on her talent. She hears only the criticism, not the appreciation.
Niamh had a low opinion of herself and abilities. Very insecure.
Niamh apparently never received much encouragement or support from her parents. She had very low self-esteem and probably needed counseling and medication.
Niamh was depressed, insecure and overwhelmed by her life and doubted her abilities.
