I finished the book yesterday and am a bit confused. First, the storyline of the three young women was interesting, suspenseful, and yet, what happened to them at the end?? Do we know if Yeva survives?

Did Nastia and Sol mother’s “voice” only appear at the end? Was she or not Masha?

The yurt conversations were another thread that puzzled me.

Overall, the book held my interest but had some complexities that left me wondering. I read the author’s conversation on BB, which helped a bit.

I’d appreciate others opinions!!

Hey @NanK I can’t remember what happened to the girls. I can come back in a month when I’ve revisited the book for my IRL book club. Hold that thought!

I think the yurt section was autobiographical. Reference the author speaking to us about not knowing how to incorporate the war into her book which was already underway when the war commenced.

@NanK, my opinion is that the author indicated that Nastia could either find out about her mother or save Yeva. Since Nastia made the choice to save Yeva, I think she lived.

I thought the book was good - kind of averge - until that twist in the middle. Not only was it creative, but it really illustrated what the author was going through at the time, being in Canada trying to write a novel while her relatives were in Ukraine getting bombed. I thought it was exceptionally well done, and took the book from average to “wow.” It all gets very meta toward the end, but I think Masha is the author inserting herself into the narrative in a different way.

Reva must have felt intense anguish as the circumstances unfolded in Ukraine. Inserting herself into the writing was apparent, and so, the book has subtle autobiographical elements. The various voices near the end was where/when I became a bit confused. It’s likely rereading the book and then discussing it with a group would be enlightening. I’ll await your comments, Anne.
