Who do you feel was the villain in the story? Did your perspective change as the story went on?
I actually thought that Jane was the villain. Poor Dan may have been a complacent bore after 19 years of marriage, but Jane seemed to be dealing with issues of self identity with Sissy about to leave the nest, and was looking for something more exciting. So she was about to throw it away due to boredom, and was using those texts as her reason, rather than just confronting Dan
Otto, in my opinion was the villain throughout due to his ongoing corruption making decisions to benefit him personally. Brick, on the other hand, did appear to be the violent person in the story but by the end he ends up not being such a bad guy after all.
The obvious choice is Otto with his Musk/Bezos/etc. mashup (I laughed at the nod to Mackenzie Scott’s philanthropy in Vaughn’s post-divorce actions in the Epilogue). But I’d vote for Kyle as he took some big risks with other people’s lives for viral moments and book sales.
I don’t think there were any villains in the end. Actually maybe Kyle because he didn’t even read Jane’s story but he was ready to push to promote it and get everyone to read it. He’s one of those publishers that just wants the money and then we’re stuck reading an aweful book just because it somehow became popular lol.
