Which supporting characters were you most drawn to? What made their storylines compelling?
I really liked Michelle. I think she was trying to get to the truth of the story and she had a bit of innocence and awe.
My favorite character was Bernice, who seemed to have a normal, functional life even though she was a model. She made the effort to maintain her friendship with Birdie, too. I kind of think if it had been totally up to Birdie, their friendship would have slowly gone by the wayside.
I liked Bernice, because I loved how honest she was. She was beautiful and talented, but like most women she still questioned whether she had gotten there on her talent.
I loved how the rock star was never given a name. I felt his character was brilliantly drawn and was symbolic of abusers we find in all places of power.
Bernice is my favorite supporting character. The reader was able to see how her career and life developed in contrast to what was going on in Birdie’s life at the same time. Bernice proved to be a good friend to Birdie over the decades.
I really liked Bernice. She was a true friend.
I liked Harriet, who was a professional woman in a very competitive business before it was commonplace. I liked how she tried to protect and nurture Birdie, and still retain some professional distance.
I was drawn to Harriet because she was to me the “unknown factor” in Birdies life. Her motivation was mostly to her own career in developing models and their careers…so she was self serving in many respects but there was a modicum of caring she displayed towards Birdie,
I was drawn to Harriet and would have liked to have heard her side of the story. Were there other attempts at helping Birdie that we don’t know about? Did she try to intervene when Birdie stayed in her apartment in New York?
I liked Bernice from the get-go. She had it together, a strong Black woman when the world was telling her she won’t make it. She found happiness, a career and the love of a good and understanding man. She was always there to support Birdie, quietly and lovingly. I also liked the author’s decision to leave the rock star unnamed. He was brilliantly drawn from several of the many famous ones. I found myself feeling so sorry for the women who eventually wore the star’s wedding ring and became the mothers of his children.
