Which of the minor characters was a favorite, and why?
I enjoyed following all of the models. Their diverse backgrounds and particularly the reactions of their families to their modeling work, which varied hugely depending upon their social class, was fascinating. I don’t every remember thinking that girls who were models were somehow “loose women,” but I think the picture Lloyd paints makes sense in context.
I also enjoyed learning more about all of the models and their lives away from Mary Quant. I think I enjoyed Fern the most, rooting for her success, especially after she learned of her true heritage, which was obviously not her doing. Shame on her mother for not standing by her side.
I also loved the models and gaining insight into that industry from young women (some, still really girls) just starting out. I found that so interesting and have empathy and new formed respect for their hard work and the “crap” they had to put up with particularly from the men involved in their burgeoning careers.
As many other readers, I liked the models. I also like how the author made their backgrounds different from each others. And I also like how their different backgrounds did not lead to their not being supportive of each other. No “cattiness from these girls, Only hard work and a determination to make it as a career. I really didn’t have a favorite, I liked each of them and drawn to how each of them showed kindness for each other.
I liked Daphne. Even though she was from a wealthy family she was kind and not conceited at all. I liked that she stood by her beliefs and didn’t bend to her mom’s expectations. She didn’t want to dress the part or become a debutante in order to marry the “right” guy. She dressed in fun clothes designed by Mary, had a career, and made her own money.
