Which of the characters in In Our Midst do you consider the most American, according to your definition of fundamental American values?
Mr Griffin, Nina, Gerhart, Iris, Hugh, Bess, and Mr Beale
I agree with Joyce. Plus all the characters supported one another in their decisions and through their harships and successes.
I agree that Mr. Griffin is the most American. He is the best of all our ideals. But there are always variations of being a “good American” and I do think Nina, Gerhart, Iris, Hugh, Otto, Bess and Mr. Beale all have moments of being the best of what American can be. But I would make the list more expansive. I would include the prison guard, Mr. Lew who learned every prisoners name and tried to treat them with dignity while still being a soldier told to do a job! Or the sisters who kept Nina prisoner as required by the law, but tried to assist where they could. Sometimes it is more than the big heroic act, but instead the same acts that offer a person dignity and hope and recognizes they are a person,
