Which character, major or minor, did you like the most, which did you like the least, and why?
Becca, a struggling young mother just trying to survive during the thick of the Depression, is my favorite character. The least favorite, of course, is Becca’s mother-in-law; a nasty and horrible person.
I liked Walt who stepped in to save Evie - at risk to his own life.
I loved Drew and Walt who stepped up to support Becca and Evie. They were such caring individuals. The mother in law - ugh - no wonder her sons cut off their relationships with her!
Who did I like the least, of course Mildred and also Dory, both for the evil they did. Who did I like the most, I really liked Lottie. I loved her personality and that the town thought she was a bit insane! Also loved that she took such good care of Becca, including living her a home in her Will.
I liked so many of the characters. While following so many characters was confusing at first, once I sorted it out with the help of notes, I really ended up liking the development of each one. Nell was my favorite, though. I admired the way she dealt with life, trying to understand and help everyone as well as lead a life she enjoyed. My least favorite character was Mildred, Becca’s mother-in-law. She seemed to think only of herself and was never honest. I did wish that Becca had shared what she found out about Mildred being one of Bett’s first “working girls”!
I honestly say that I loved most of these characters! They were well drawn, with each giving the reader a glimpse into their heart. Obviously Mildred is the demon of the story. She’s not just flawed, but controlling and malevolent. I loved Nell. She was loving and protective of those she loved.
Oh I agree about Mildred! I was (somewhat silently) screaming about her evilness and horrible attempts at stealing Evie away. There are no circumstances under which I could feel sorry for her.
I think I liked Walt the best. He did what he could to help all concerned. Mildred was definitely not a nice person. I would hate to be under her thumb.
My favorite character was Becca. I feel she had great strength of character and just wanted to be a good wife to Ben and and a good mother to Evie. She was tested in so many ways but never gave up even though many obstacles blocked blocked her progress,
My least favorite character was Mildred. I couldn’t find any redeeming qualities in her. She was selfish and controlling and acted only in her own self interest.
I like both Drew and Walt a lot. They were both unassuming and kind. Walt did his best to help Becca which was way above and beyond. Also
First of all, there were a number of characters that were likeable in this book,; however, if I had to choose one it would be Becca. She was a kind person who cared for others especially her daughter. She was willing to do everything she could to provide a loving home for Evie as well as well as stability and protection. The one person, least likeable was, Mildred Chambers, Ben’s mother. She was an evil person who cared little for anyone else. She did everything she could to take Evie away from her mother by setting traps for Becca and lying about Becca’s circumstances.

Nell for persistence in figuring out the story
Tony, Drew, and Walt for all being genuinely good guys
I thought the world of both Drew and Walt. They both in their own way tried to help and protect Becca and Evie. I despised Ben’s mother, Mildred. She had obviously been horrible to her two sons, but the lengths she went to where Becca and Evie were concerned was absolutely horrendous.
