Which book-to-screen movie or TV series inspired you to go read the book it was based upon?

For me, it was News of The World, by Paulette Jiles. And way back, Never Cry Wolf, by Farley Mowatt.

For me the book almost always precedes the movie or show. The one exception I can think of was Anna and the King when I saw the movie with Yul Brynner and Deborah Kerr as a child and didn’t read the book until later.

I have been too often disappointed by the movie depiction of books, so I typically read the book only. Sometimes, I watch the movie version if I feel it will be a story that will transfer well.

Usually I have read the book first then learn a movie is/has been made. I don’t recall a title that I viewed first then read the book.

I’ve been watching the movies based on Jane Austen’s novels in honor of the 250th birthday celebration. I plan to reread the novels during this year.

The Sideways series is pretty solid.

@Dorothy_Schwab which are your favorites? Mine are the P&P version with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth, and Persuasion with Amanda Root and Ciarán Hinds. P&P is a frequent re-read for me.

That sounds so fun!

This is a very interesting question. I’ve thought about it long and hard, even browsed through a movie journal I keep; and honestly, I couldn’t find a single example of a movie having moved me to read the book. It’s always the other way around.

I really try to read the book before watching the movie or TV series which really causes problems with our Direct TV recorded list! We’re down to 14% in available memory because of the movies and TV series I have recorded, but need/want to read the books first. Needing to read a book other than those keeps coming up. My husband is getting a little aggravated. :smirk:

Never Cry Wolf is one of my all-time favorite “from book to movie” films. So many memorable scenes that are brought to life in ways that the book just couldn’t convey. At least not for me. So it’s a perfect example of a movie that I enjoyed far more than the book upon which it was based. Might just be time to watch it again.:grinning:
