When Vicki’s murderer is revealed, Olivia asks Merritt if she doesn’t feel bad for that person, if only a little. (p. 375) What about you? Did you feel bad for the killer at all?
I felt no sympathy for the killer. As a character she came across strangely. She kept saying Cicky was depressed while others said she was happy. The killer in a way was no different than Lauren believing she was entitled to more than she was.
I guess there are times when you can empathize with the reason someone could commit a crime without condoning the act. Vicki’s murderer had reason to feel neglected, abandoned, etc. This in no way would justify committing such a horrible crime.
I sort of felt bad for her, but how you respond to different situations says a lot about your character. It is also the difference between a murderer and someone who talks to their friends about their problems and moves on.

I agree with Wendy_F. Those were my sentiments too.
I did not feel bad for the killer at all. Any sympathy I had for her mistreatment disappeared when I found out she was the murderer.

Sometimes I can understand why someone might murder, but don’t agree that they should have actually committed murder. There are some circumstances where I could be driven to such a drastic act (stay away from my kids), but I would probably turn myself in!
Absolutely I did. She was loyal and loving all those years, living in the shadows and never being able to be publicly in love. And then Vicki just dismissed her with a note. The pain and anger in such a situation would be unbearable. I felt very sorry for her.
No I did not feel bad for the killer. Yes her feelings were hurt by Victoria’s decision but she should not have killed Victoria.

Yes, I did find myself feeling a little sorry for the killer and somewhat less sympathetic toward Vicki. At times, Vicki seemed dismissive of Robin’s feelings, and I especially didn’t like the note she left on the door to end the relationship. Of course, none of that justifies murder in any way, but I could understand how years of hurt and rejection might slowly build into something very dark and painful
I didn’t much like Robin all through the book, suspected she might be the killer, and felt no sympathy for her at all. I know that’s a harsh reaction, but the person I felt wrst for was Robin’s mother, who, despite her very vocal dislike of Vicki, was dependent on Robin and the income Robin had always derived from Vicki. What will now happen to Pat Tucci?
While you can almost relate to why they did it, nothing justifies killing another person
I can feel empathy for the pain and suffering the murderer went through, however I don’t feel bad for them. They made their choices over many years.
I did not really liike Robin. But I did feel sympathy for her. She had devoted her life to Vickey. Vicky did not even repect her enough to break up in person. I do not agree with her choice to murder but I understand her motive
I think you can empathize with someone’s motives for committing a crime while still believing that they have to pay the consequences for their actions!
