I’m not sure I admire one woman today who could do the kind of ground-breaking that Francis Perkins did. We have some front and center women, especially a couple of governors, but they don’t seem to have the resolve, or the reputation among the general public. And, we do have some strong women in the upper levels of government. So many of them (men, too) seem to be interested in politics to make a name for themselves rather than do the hard groundwork behind the scenes work. I hope that someday we will have a female president, but at the moment I couldn’t recommend one, nor could I recommend one like Frances Perkins.

I am not sure that our country today would give that power to any woman. We are still discounted.

Unfortunately, I believe you’re right…

I think there are plenty of women today that are “ground-breaking.” The accomplishment of women today is constantly downplayed; even the framing of this questions implies that women aren’t doing groundbreaking work everyday. I think it’s important to remember that a woman was the last sitting Vice President of the United States. An all female space flight just happened (though the rich celebrities carried every headline - not the literal female rocket scientists, but I digress…) Women are breaking ground every day, but our society still insists on maintaining male dominance in its discourse.

Isn’t it sad to think 100 years has passed, but we are still fighting the same stereotypes?
