What was the last book you DNF’d, and why did you choose to give up on it?

I just quit on The Vivisectors by Missouri Williams.
It’s from the Booker Prize longlist so I guess somebody liked it but it was way too artsy and conceptual for me.

Mine was The Green Mile. I got as far as learning the mouse wasn’t going to meet a good end and gave up. It was obvious where the plot was headed, and it was just getting too brutal. I think I have a problem reading about people in authority who are unnecessarily cruel and who are allowed to go unchecked. I have to deal with that enough in real life, and adding it to my fantasy life has little appeal.

ALL FOURS by Miranda July
I was interested in reading about her road trip to the east. How she didn’t get very far and all the sexual details did not interest me at my age of 75!

I must admit it is something I rarely do. . . DNF a book. “Into The Blue” started as a Jenna’s Pick with good reviews and high expectations, but it simply didn’t make it for me. The premise was strong, and the connection between AJ and Noah was powerful. By the time I finished Part I, was hooked, or at least I thought I was, however, as I started Part II it changed. Filled with the art of making a rather strange movie, the “slide” began, and my attention with it. The more I read, the more frustrated I became. Finally, having decided enough is enough and I simply closed the page and marked it on my reading list as DNF. Interesting fact, the older I have gotten, the easier its been to DNF a book.

I stopped reading PENITENCE as the characters were confusing. I read summaries and reviews mentioned the unanswered plot lines left the reading wondering why there wasn’t a clear resolution.

I gave James Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake a try. It defeated me.
