Yes, I knew there was a suicide and I believed that ultimately that Eniiyi would find her own way and prove the curse wrong.

The women were so accepting of the “curse” and what it meant to their own lives. That acceptance kept them from striving to be their real selves when it came to their relationships with men. They believed their relationships with men were doomed to fail and seemed to accept that it was the “curse” and not their own actions. When things failed, it was attributed to the “curse.” Having Mama G around so much didn’t help either.

Since Eniiyi looked so much like Monife, I really expected to find out that she was Monife’s child - not Ebun’s. I’m still unclear about why Ebun decided to convince Monife to abort and then didn’t abort her own pregnancy. Reversal might have made more sense and I expected to find out that Ebun had actually been raising Monife’s child all along. However, that wasn’t the case.

Since Ebun rejected Eniiyi’s father, I’m surprised she didn’t abort the child as well - particularly since she believed it would be so hard to be a single mother and thus still live out the curse.

I was surprised that Eban talked Monife into aborting her baby saying that she was doing the same. I believe she never was going to abort her baby. Why she did that I do not know. Was it jealousy because Monife usually had all the attention? I do think it was very sad.

Eniiyi learning about her father and the rather uncanny genetically inherited skin condition was a surprise.

I was surprised at the twist that Eniiyi ends up dating Zubby, who is the son of Golden Boy. This just further cements the fact that she is so much like Monife and might be repeating her mistakes, that she realizes she must escape her family to start over and find herself, not being overshadowed constantly by Monife.

I caught on pretty quickly to the surprises before they were revealed. I guess the one I was least expecting was the abortion storyline. The reader knew Tolu blamed Ebun for Monife’s death and I thought there might be a betrayal or something more sinister, but would not have anticipated that plot line.

I agree it bother me that she did not follow course. I have pondered this question for awhile, never finding any answer that fits. Perhaps she really loved the man and felt they would eventually become a wedded couple, but then she tried in every way to not do so. Its troublesome, perhaps only the author knows the answer. If I am ever able to discuss this book with its author, it would be the number 1 question on my list.

I was also surprised by the abortion section. As I was reading I couldn’t figure out why Monife didn’t realize Ebun wasn’t going through the same thing she was. Why wasn’t she taken to the hospital too?

I was also surprised by Tolu knowing about the abortion pact.

I was surprised most by the abortion storyline. The plot twist that I did see coming was Zubby”s relationship to Golden Boy. As soon as Eniiyi met him, I just had a feeling that was going to be the case.
