What surprised you the most about the plot? Did you detect any “red herrings”?

The ending surprised me the most.

I was sure the female facility director - can’t remember her name now - was involved, especially when she came around the corner and caught the ladies taking care of that second body.

Weirdly, I had just finished another book in which the abandoned child of a cheating husband was the murderer so I wasn’t surprised by that element. After one of the characters commented on how often Polly is knitting, I closed the book and saw the knitting hands on the cover and thought, “Aha! A clue!” Lol

But, like another reader mentions, I was more involved in character interactions than solving the mystery.

I was surprised by the ending. I think we have come to expect totally happy endings, but this one is probably more realistic. After so many years behind bars, it must have been hard for Carol on the outside. She knows how to “be” inside. It was certainly a gesture of great friendship. I am glad her outside people didn’t desert her.

At first I was saddened by the ending, however, after I thought about it for a couple of hours I realized it was the only one that could be written. Carol found it hard on the outside. however she did know how to be a friend, her gestures showed the reader that fact clearly. I was pleased that the outside friends continued to be there for her, in or out of jail.

I think I was most surprised that Bob was involved with the hash cake business. A red herring was when he didn’t let Laura know he went on the roof.

That Inspector Beattie killed Giles and that Jim had been an undercover cop and Geoffrey had a history with him.
