What does it mean for Birdie to be one of Harriet’s Girls? How does this meaning change?
Birdie felt it was an honor to be one of Harriet’s girls. She looked at Harriet as a mother figure. But Birdie realized Harriet would never look at her as a daughter and became disillusioned. Birdie also felt the group would be a great way to make friends but she soon realized everyone was out for themselves.
It was an honor to be chosen as one of her girls and I think she thought it meant she was chosen and wanted. She seemed to be viewed as a mother figure and protector. Of course, when Birdie realizes that Harriet knew that she should have done something about the rock star and didn’t, it tore her and their relationship apart.
I think she thought that it meant she had made it and she was very special. It took a few years for her to realize that wasn’t true.
