What do you understand Billie to mean when she says that people's words sometimes "echo" in her mind? Have you (or someone you know) ever had an experience like this?

This is how Billie processes language—words don’t just pass through; they linger and reverberate. I imagine many people experience something similar, especially with emotionally charged statements. Do you ever play on repeat an unpleasant conversation you had and how it continues to upset you?

Conversations infused with strong emotional impacts can echo for years especially if these were undermined with anger, mistrust, challenging one’s views or values, etc. The pleasant conversations that have great joy and happiness attached tend not to resurface as frequently. Billie couldn’t let go of the more intense words and scenarios, much like most of us.

I liked that reference to words echoing in Billie’s mind. I pictured it as hearing again the words that have been spoken. I have had both upsetting and comforting words of others come back to me.

I have experienced people’s voices, echoing in my head. Most of the time it is either my own conscious or People who had a profound effect on my life. Sometimes when I say things, I will think I sound just like my mom or my dad and I hear it in their voice.

Yes - initially, I thought it was probable that Billie was on the spectrum…but then I realized that I, too, have conversations from long ago that still echo in my mind. It seems that she is intrigued by these words, even if they are hurtful, and like a dog worrying a bone, cannot let them go.

I thought this was interesting and no I have never experienced this.

I agree with the respondents that many of us have conversations, phrases, or events that reverberate and stay with us for a long time if not forever. It seems I am constantly second guessing things I said or how I responded to certain events.
