I think of home as a physical space. Family to me means the rope in your life who are meaningful to you.

Family and home are where one is currently. Family can be blood relatives or friends that become your family.

The author’s concepts of home and family are the places we love because the ones we love are there. Home is the feeling of content and security rather a physical place. Family is the people who make up the group of those who love us and we love back. It is the connections we make and not necessarily the folks who share our DNA.

Home and family are different for everyone. Your sibling could have a totally different feeling about what home and family are than you. Home and family are where you feel safe and comfortable and doesn’t tie to DNA or where you physically live,

I think the author is making a point about chosen home and chosen family. Edie establishes home and family for herself in France, even though they’re not the home or family she was born with.
