What did you think of the relationship between the two girls? In what ways did it change as they got older, and why do you suppose that was?
They seemed to be quite close as children and teens. The big split came when Mo had an abortion but Ebun did not. Betrayal? And as I recall Ebun nixed or messed up the message to or from GB. My memory is fading. That was the turning point in their relationship. Mo’s spiraled down from there.
I think NanK summed up the relationship very well. Even though Ebun was younger, she seemed more mature for her age and I think that was appealing to Monique since she seemed to be a “wild child”. I think the relationship started to change when Monique became enamored with Golden Boy. There was very little mention of men in Ebun’s life so she might have become a bit envious of Mo.
Though Ebun tried to hide her pregnancy I don’t believe she ever intended to get an abortion, Instead she thought it was in Mo’s best interest to get an abortion, and telling Mo she had decided to get one would give Mo the extra incentive. As NanK said, this was definitely a betrayal and everything went downhill after that.
I think they got along as children, but you could sense the undercurrent of jealousy forming. Gosh, I felt really bad for Mo. The author’s development of how Mo ended up the way she did was done really well. Ebun’s role was the icing on the cake. Their relationship was really terrible as they got older.
The big change in their relationship was when Ebun didn’t go through with the abortion.
