What did you think of the novel’s post-Troy ending? Did you enjoy the way the various threads wrapped up? Would you have liked to have seen a different ending for any of the characters?
I really liked the ending. They are immortal so it’s really cool to follow them through time and see what they would be doing. I also liked that the entire book wrapped around the statue even until the end.
Genius! As I was reading, my son also was watching the Percy Jackson TV series. One of the things we kept talking about was, when did people stop believing in the mythology.
I loved where Lauren J.A. Bear took the characters as they wove through the other cultures to present time. And her take on them in the modern age was perfect!
I loved it and I think the part about being able to truly love yourself being a requirement for feeling love and happiness was brilliant. I am a therapist and I can tell you that I emphatically believe this to be true. The fact that Aphrodite was the most beautiful woman in the world and had to learn to love herself in order to truly experience love was a wonderful gift from the author. This is such a human thing and made her so relatable to us mere mortals.
Perfection! Sometimes a novel leaves me disappointed. That was not the case here and by bringing the tale into modern times, the knot tied for Aphrodite. Beauty is more than skin deep and often it takes a lifetime to understand that.
I enjoyed it. To think that these gods could still be walking around and participating in human life sounds fun. As I was reading the book I found myself wondering though, some of the gods were born as infants others like Aphrodite not. They age but at a very different pace than us lowly mortals, so it’s odd to think of them as “getting older”.
I loved the ending. It brought together the reason for the sculptor’s character, and it showed the endurance of storytelling over time. I wouldn’t have changed a thing.
I absolutely LOVED it. And the little girl being touched by her and then growing up to write a book…wow. In my head I thought sequel, please!
I loved everything about the ending. I loved that she visited Alexandros’ grave to update him on the world. I loved the story of her statue, and I loved that Aphrodite and Ares were living in modern times with modern jobs. It was terrific.
Very original and excellent ending.
I really liked the ending. I thought the later chapters with Alexandros were really sweet. I cried a little with his passing.
I thought it was an interesting take to talk about the gods and goddesses in the modern world. I loved how Ares was now a peace keeper and Aphrodite is a human rights lawyer.
After I finished the book, I was wondering if all these popular Greek re-tellings are giving them some of their strength back.
I loved that Bear kept the statue the focus of the story. Even at the end, Aphrodite wanted to see how she was represented in art. I also loved that she grew into her role as an advocate for women. Seeing the two of them at the end was so satisfying.
I liked that the ending considered how the roles of the gods would change over time. The jobs both Aphrodite and Ares picked fit them perfectly.
What an ending! It made the book the next level for me. By now, many of us have read a retelling but this made it a slightly different take.
I was so touched when she visited Alexandros’ grave to talk to him. The statue added a great element I smiled at the idea that gods are in modern times with jobs with modern jobs. Afterall, if they are a god, why can’t they still be around! Well done!
