What did you think of the book’s remote, wintery setting? How did the atmosphere affect your enjoyment of the plot?
I thought that the setting was one of the best parts of the book. Having spent time in areas with a large amount of snow and ice, a lot of it rang true. I especially enjoyed the description of the effort it requires to walk through deep snow, and the sound of the ice breaking in the river. Made me cold just thinking about it!
I thought the author did an amazing job, on how she described the scenery. I could easily picture it my mind.
I liked it. It made the story a bit more frightening and dangerous!
I thought the setting was perfect and its “up north” Wisconsin. I definitely think the cold snowy dark atmosphere added to the intensity and mysteriousness of the story.
I really enjoyed the setting of the book. I felt it was described in a way that made it easy to picture and contributed to the mood of the story.
I read the last part of the book during a snowstorm. It made it a bit more fun to see the snow fall as I read
As a frequent visitor of Door County and northern WI, the story would have been very different in other seasons. Both summer and fall are heavy tourist times so the plot wouldn’t have worked. The setting was a main character, too.
Nan, That is such a good point about the tourists. I never thought about that, but it would not have worked in a different season!
I am all over this setting ! I love the description without actually having to have the inconvenience of the frozen state from November to March. In Illinois, it thaws and goes away in between the snow storms. It harder to find times to XC ski or snowshoe, but the day to day is so much easier with out the “perma chunks of ice” under foot for month straight! I lived decades in Wisconsin and Minnesota and the length of the hard frost is a trial, even IF it is beautiful! Books a great “getaway”!
The setting worked well with the book. I read a lot of it huddled under my electric throw. It was hard to imagine how Morgan survived after she fell into the frigid water and then managed to drag herself out and make it home in wet, freezing clothes. One can only live in freezing water for a very short time, often less than 15 minutes, before being incapacitated from cold shock or hypothermia that quickly reduce muscle function and awareness. Morgan managed to survive by quickly dragging herself out of the water while she still had control of her muscles,
I, too, was skeptical of the description of Morgan’s survival in the frigid water. Possible? Probably. The author must have thought so in order to include this in the narrative.
I agree. I think the setting was one of the things that cloaked people that Morgan thought she saw. I could feel the darkness and coldness of all the snow.
Nan, I never thought about that, but you are so right, The action couldn’t have taken place with tourists everywhere.
I loved the setting, the atmospheric landscape felt like a character in the book. I grew up in the Midwest, but rarely experienced the extent of winter described in this story.
The location contributed to the overall mystery. Snow filled, cold days and small isolated town set the stage for “small town” cover ups.
I loved the setting of this one. Winter is my favorite season, so I’m slightly biased. I got lost in the snowy landscape.
