What did you think of Polly’s relationship with the Lion? Why do you think the two women were so close?

Polly and the Lion shared this tight knit bond and admirably strong friendship. When I think of a lion, I think of an indomitable, powerful, protective animal. Both the Lion and Polly were indomitable, powerful, and protective. They were fiercely loyal to each other and to the women employed by Polly.

I agree and they both had a lot to lose if something happened to the other one.

I thought Polly felt like the Lion was her equal in many ways. They both had responsibilities toward the girls & the safety of the business. I think Polly could share her real concerns with the Lion in ways she could not with anyone else.

Polly genuinely cared for her girls and the people who worked in her club. The Lion needed to Polly to be successful, for the girls to be well treated and for the club to continue having high standards in order for herself to make a living. I felt they had been together for long enough that their mutual needs and concerns led to more than just a working relationship. They truly came to respect and care for each other. So, it may have started as just a job, but the Lion and Polly soon became BFFs!

I liked the relationship these two women had and held onto thru difficult times. They supported and had each other’s backs. They loved and respected each other and I believe would go to the ends of the earth to see that the other one was safe and secure.

It seemed to me that the Lion was a mother figure for Polly and became the mother that POLLY never really had. The Lion had Polly’s back no matter what. She looked after Polly, was always ready with a cup of tea and even tried to get her to stop smoking. It was an interesting relationship I would have liked to know more about.

They were both very loyal and very protective of each other. And they both had a strong desire for Polly to be successful. It was somewhat unclear to me how they came to be so close. Maybe I missed something or maybe it could have been better explained?

They were friends, yet competitors, and there was a sort of “know the enemy” tone to the relationship at the beginning. They were friends and both wanted similar outcomes for their workers and worked together to achieve whatever they could to protect themselves and their workers.

The Lion was her protector and was fiercely loyal to Polly. I think that is why the authors didn’t choose a real name for her. Although the Lion was a subordinate to Polly, I feel to a degree, Polly viewed her as an equal partner.

Polly came to the Lion’s rescue when she had a family criris. Polly’s actions were completely unsolicited and she expected nothing in return, but the Lion returned to repay her kindness & a bond was forged. They understand each other, and the Lion is very loyal and protective of Polly. She’s a bit like her Jiminy Cricket, whispering advice and counsel on her shoulder. And the Lion is the person Polly trustsk who keeps her calm and centered. They help each other.
