What did you think about Niamh’s belief that her mother only moved to a small, rural cottage so that Niamh couldn’t move in with her?
It almost seemed like it was true and I think that was very sad.
I think Niamh was an insecure individual struggling with her identity and purpose in life and could only see what her insecurities would allow. She struggled with her grief on top of her other insecurities and could not see past her thoughts of self doubt and failure. She needed to move forward and learn more about her mother and their relationship which she slowly discovers as she moves through the story.
I thought that this belief was very self-centered. Niamh did not seem to be prioritizing what her mother really wanted and needed for herself.

I agree. Niamh seemed to leap to assumptions about her mom’s reasons to move. Annie’s move wasn’t clear to me other than the author used this to set the stage for the murder mystery.
Niamh is very self involved, more in keeping with an adolescent than an adult. But I wouldn’t blame the mom for moving away; Niamh had to be a bit much.

Why did Niamh move to the small village? Honestly, I don’t think it was so her daughter couldn’t move in with her. Maybe she was having a writers block and thought a change would help.
No, I don’t think that’s why Niamh’s mother moved there. But because Niamh is insecure and jealous of Leah, she believes so.
That seemed to be more of her insecurity and depression than her mother’s actual intent.
