When characters don’t seem to get along, it’s a sure sign in a romance novel, if you can call this a romance novel, that there is going to be some kind of attraction. Once the stomach references started (skitters, tugging sensations, flutters, heat, curling sensations, roiling, guilt churning, pulling, flicker of heat, rocks, etc), you know something will happen. If you can’t tell, I’m not a fan of all these stomach descriptions to show emotion.

Jacqueline has identified the red herring style of romance novels. We are led to think that they dislike each other or are indifferent but somehow you know that this only means there will be an attraction.

Just being put off by the other, Evelyn and William, created a vibe. Whether they wanted to admit it or not there was instant attraction. Had they met in a ball room by friends, they would have seen it immediately.

Their first meeting was cute and I did sense an attraction. Maybe because I’ve read too many books.

I have also read a lot of romance novels over the years, though not recently, and when sparks fly at the initial meeting, it’s a sure sign that the two are attracted to each other. So I knew immediately that William would be the romantic interest, and that was way too predictable for me.
