What did you initially think of Penelope, and of her relationship with Piers? How did your opinion of her change over the course of the novel? How about your opinion of Piers?
I thought she was a gold digger and that she wanted the mansion. But she turned out to be very helpful for all the members of the family and she did love Piers. There did not seem to be much mention of Piers. He was certainly a business man. He was not to much involved with the family. But it must be mentioned that he also lost his son and was most likely grieving in his own way. He was sad when he discovered he was not Billy’s biological father.
Penelope initially was a bit overbearing but mellowed and was then acceptable. She was a nicer character for me the reader to accept at the end of the story.
I agree with Nan’s assessment of Penelope.
I was initially feeling both sorry for her (the new comer) and annoyed that she felt she had the right to make any decisions for Thirza or the family home. Once she became more acclimated to the family and eased up she was more likable.
I agree with Karen and Nan. She was a good support for Thirza as the story progressed.
I agree with all the previous comments. I didn’t like her when she appeared in the story and then by the end I liked her and thought she was good for the family!
As most have mentioned we all thought like Thirza that she was a golddigger but yes, she turned out to be an asset to the family. She definitely helped Piers to have a true and loyal love partner which he had lacked prior. Piers was more insightful than he seemed at first and very forgiving.
Her character transformed from the gold digger and younger flame to a more well rounded role as second wife and support to Piers and Thirza during all their challenges.
I agree with the others that wrote. She apparently did love Piers. After he met her he became devoted to her and did not pursue having affairs as he did with when he was married to Dulcie. I don’t know if it was because he matured, or because he met someone who actually did love him.
I agree with the general assessment. I was glad she didn’t turn into the story’s villain and found that refreshing
