There was a lot of give and take between Evelyn and William. Both had strong personalities, particularly Evelyn. It took a while for the two to mesh.

It is a common trope in romances where the two characters spend a lot of time wondering if the other person truly cares about them and if they deserve him or her. I enjoyed the “chase” and was rooting for them to come together in the end.

The romance was very slow moving with lots of doubts on both sides.

I didn’t think the romance moved all that well and I didn’t really care enough about these two to root one way or the other.

I didn’t really enjoy the romance between them. They were too combative for me to fall in love with one another. I really didn’t like William in the beginning of the book.

The story is so very “Austin like” in its story line and interactions. Just finished PBS series season 1 Sanditon and so similar. Evelyn and Miss Heyward, both strong opinionated women uncommon for the time.

I think that was the typical romance for the time frame. They both had their own problems and once they realized they needed to confide in each other, things went well. A young romance always has it’s ups and downs - theirs were minor in comparison to some others. Here again ‘truth’ was the only way forward.

That they had a mutual respect for each other. I hate William felt the need to lie to everyone about his circumstances. They almost missed out on their romance because neither trusted anyone.

The romance was predictable for this type of book, so I could see what was going to happen, knew they would squabble for a while, not be truthful for a while, then eventually come together. No surprises for me.

It’s not an unusual love story! A antagonist relationship, a slow warming to each other etc. I thought the author did a fantastic job in building the relationship. Not all of the story was predictable. Slowly building the two characters was a key to the story.
