What book or books are you reading this week? We’d love to know!
Reading Wandering Stars by Tommy Orange for an upcoming book club discussion. So far I’m really enjoying it. I’ve only just started, so I’m still on the first character - Jude - but I’m pleasantly surprised at the character’s complexity.
In audiobook format, I’m just finishing book 1 of the Silo series (Wool) and will roll right in to book two. I’ve enjoyed noting the difference between the TV show & the book. Whoever put together the series did an excellent job. When they made a choice to deviate from the book, it was an improvement, I think. Don’t get me wrong, the book is good, but the series is probably a bit better. One of the nice things about the book is that what’s going on is a bit clearer.
I just finished That Librarian by Jennifer Jones about her experiences being attacked by cyberbullies for speaking against censorship at a library board meeting. It’s horrifying what she has had to endure.
Just starting Playground by Richard Powers.
Listening to Aflame by Pico Eyer.
I am going to be starting Orbital by Samantha Harvey.
I’ll be interested to hear what you think of Playground, @Anne_Glasgow! I thought it was mind-blowing.
I’ll be interested to hear what you think of Orbital, @Brenda_Wychock. I loved the novel, but it seems like it’s one of those polarizing books - you either love it or hate it.
I heard that too. I hope I like it. It sounds interesting. It is going to be different for me for sure. I don’t usually read anything to do with space or anything like that.
I am reading The Frozen River for book club. It is a reread for me and I am enjoying it even more this second time. Also will start Concrete Rose for my library Banned Bookclub.
After finishing “Frozen River”, I picked up “Serviceberry” by Robin Wall Kimmerer and just started “Mask of the Deer Woman” by Laurie L. Dove.
I started my 1st Pulitzer of the year, Trust by Hernan Diaz. I plan to read 6 of them this year. For bookclub we are reading All You Can Ever Know by Nicole Chung and The River by Peter Heller.
Seconding @kim.kovacs ! Please let us know what you think about Playground once you finish, we have a thread going here: What did you think of the ending of Playground? (Spoilers!) - #3 by nick - there are spoilers so wait until you finish!
I just finished Aflame by Pico Iyer (recommended) and am now reading Blue Light Hours by Bruna Dantas Lobato.
After listening to a small handful of books that I thought I would absolutely love, when they didn’t capture my attention early on, I simply didn’t waste my time but kept going through my list of downloads. Finally realizing that I needed something a bit more lighthearted,I landed on The Love Elixir of Augusta Stern by Lynda Cohen Loigman. I am finding it a worthy juxtaposition to the decidedly more serious and thematically ‘heavy’ No Place to Bury the Dead by Karina Sainz Borgo.
I love how such a simple question can generate new reading possibilities through members’ replies!
With the recent hubbub in the Book Browse community for this title, I’ve just placed a hold on it. The wait will be long, so I will advert my eyes away from any spoilers. The subject matter is decidedly different from anything I typically read, which makes it all the more alluring.
Currently reading Sarah’s Quilt: A Novel of Sarah Agnes Prine and the Arizona Territories, 1906 by Nancy E. Prine for my next book club meeting. It’s #2 in the series about the author’s grandmother homesteading and making a life in Arizona Territory. We read the first in the series in November and members wanted to continue to #2. I’m not loving it, but I’m not hating it and will finish it.
Also reading Silas Marner by George Eliot for a book discussion event at a nearby library. Although written over 150 years ago, it is not a difficult read at all and I think will be a great introduction to George Eliot.
Just finished Babylonia by Constanza Casati as part of BookBrowse’s First Impressions Book Club discussion. Any reader that enjoys mythology, ancient history, or stories of strong women will definitely like Babylonia.
Amid two books: another charming S.J. Bennett mystery starring Queen Elizabeth. A Death in Diamonds, Smoke and Mirrors by Elly Griffiths and finished Louise Penny’s Kingdom of the Blind(I am new to the completist club )
I am currently reading the historical based novel, Frozen River. It is a very compelling read, but has caused me to become infuriated at the treatment of women across time. Several years ago, I read What She Left Behind by Ellen Marie Wiseman; that historical novel had the same effect on me,
I am reading Pearce Oysters by Jocelyn Tkacs—ficitonal account of the BP drilling disaster.
I have also just started Harlem Shuffle, Colson Whitehead. It’s been on my TBR for ages.
Reading as well as listening to The Lion Women of Tehran.
