Re: You Never Know by Tom Selleck

I guess that depends on what one looks for. This is heavy into how he got started acting, with and for whom. What I really appreciate about it is Selleck’s folksy manner and the quality of his voice. He’s exactly who he seems to be. And as I’m listening while on my morning walks there have been several episodes of giggling or outright guffaws. I don’t really think of him as comic but he definitely likes to have a good time and tell a great story.

Re: Wandering Stars by Tommy Orange

I don’t know whether or not you read There There by Tommy Orange but it is his first novel and definitely informs this one. I liked Wandering Stars best of the two. I think he writes in a very specific style and it does take some effort on the reader’s part. There is not much plot so readers must be prepared to follow the links between characters—same in There There.

Not sure if this helps but I would guess his writing is pretty divisive.

I downloaded after hearing an excerpt. I too love his folksy manner of speaking

Thanks, Anne. I’ll give it a try. Will remove plot idea and look at the characters. I really appreciate the tip!

I’ve been reading The Music Shop, by Rachel Joyce. This is for my book group and while well written, it isn’t really my style. I prefer something a little more nuanced, open for many interpretations. But I just finished A Walk in the Park, about hiking the Grand Canyon. A beautiful beautiful book. One I could read multiple times as the author described the beauty of this National Park and underappreciates his remarkable resilience and strength in completing this adventure.

I liked There There. Provided insight into an indigenous community being displaced through gentrification. Displacement and inherited trauma continues.

Dianne, I really enjoyed this one and it was a book club discussion for me.

I just finished The Bridge of San Louis Rey by Thornton Wilder. It was a winner for me. It is the moral fable, and relatively short. If anyone wants to add a quick classic to their reading, this might be the book for you. It won the Pulitzer for a reason!

I just picked up The Sweet Hereafter by Russell Banks. I read it years ago and remembered loving it, even though it’s quite sad. I’m loving it again–very engrossed!

Finished a re-read of The Executioner’s Song by Norman Mailer. The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair which was very different from what I expected, but quite interesting. The English Girl by Daniel Silva, Ordinary Grace by William Kent Krueger, and The Comfort of Crows by Margaret Renkl. Listened to an audio of Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer and was enthralled throughout. Worth a second listening for sure. Up next The Bluest Eye and 48 Clues into the Disappearance of My Sister by Joyce Carol Oates.

I’m still waiting on my copy of Frozen River to arrive–has anyone else gotten theirs yet? I"d like to get it read before the discussion starts next week.

Hi @Carol_Ann_Robb - I’m not sure what the delay has been, but I don’t think anyone’s gotten a copy yet (I haven’t, at least). I’m pretty sure Nick will push the discussion back because of it. Can’t have a discussion if no one’s had time to read the book!

Hi Carol, I just sent out an email on this, it turns out the publisher never mailed the book before the holidays. The discussion has been moved to start on 2/6, sorry for the delay!
