Do you read science fiction, fantasy, or speculative fiction novels? If so, what are some of your recent favorites (i.e., those published in the 21st century)?
I used to read nothing but this genre when I was younger, but don’t know that I’ve read all that many in recent years - and even those have been classics. Very interested to see what pops up on this list so I can add books to my TBR!
I have never been a fan of either fantasy or science fiction; however, I did love A WRINKLE IN TIME when our teacher read it aloud. It wasn’t until I was in college that I discovered it was part of a series. Consequently, I read the three-part series.
I don’t read much in these genres, but I have enjoyed Naomi Novak’s Temeraire books. They’re Napoleonic wars, but with dragons! And the dragon, Temeraire, is such a great character.
My favorites are James S.A. Corey’s The Expanse series and Pierce Brown’s The Red Rising Saga. I also 5-starred Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary and The Martian, Emily St. John Mandel’s Station Eleven, Tyrell Johnson’s The Wolves of Winter, Daniel Suarez’s Delta-V, William R. Forstchen’s One Second After, The Final Day, and Pillar to the Sky, and Brian Herbert’s Sandworms of Dune and The Lady of Caladan.
Maybe we could also do our favorites of the 20th century (so I can include Frank Herbert’s Dune and others)?
@Luisa_H Yeah, we’ll probably do something like that soon.
Thanks for the reading list! My problem is that I’m old-school and I’m super familiar with (and love) the 20th-century stuff. I haven’t found much I’ve really enjoyed that has been published this century, though, and I was hoping for some suggestions! I appreciate you providing some that I can add to my list. I read The Expanse series, the Red Rising books (almost stopped at one point because I was so stricken by the “death” of one of the characters), Weir’s books, and Station Eleven. Thanks for the rest - those are new to me.
Have you read any China Mieville? I read Embassytown some years ago and I meant to get back to his writing but never have. I need to read The City and the City, if nothing else.
