What are you reading this week? And what did you think of last week’s books? (9/24/2026)

Still “slumping,” haha. Last week I read Music Against the Night by Yiyun Li, a book Ann Patchett said, “may well be the most perfectly constructed, moving, and beautiful novel I’ve ever read.” It was good, but I don’t feel it deserves such high praise. I’ll be interested to hear what others here think about it. Having a deep musical background certainly helped.

I also read San Quentin Exodus for the discussion here, which opens today.

And still listening to War and Peace.

Next up: Dear Missing Friend by Susan McGuirk, also for discussion. I’ve got high hopes for that one, since I’ve heard from several people who really enjoyed it. Then there’s The Long Walk by Slavomir Rawicz for our “1,000 Books to Read Before You Die” group. (And, BTW, anyone’s welcome to join us at any time. Click here for details. I can’t say I’ve loved every book we’ve chosen, but I’ve been glad I read each of them.)
