What are you reading this week? And what did you think of last week’s books? Please share! We’d love to know.
Heartwood by Amity Gaige.. I’m a sucker for a wilderness/ hiking related book.
I finished A Remembered Soldier which I really liked but I felt it went on a bit too long at nearly 600 pgs. It was beautifully written and translated. I also finished An American Queen which I ended up liking more than Happy Land for the same story.
I have just finished listening to The Zorg which was fascinating for its coverage of early navigation, provisioning, and finally for the abolition of slavery. However there is, of necessity, quite a bit of coverage of the brutality and horrendous conditions on board a slaving ship.
Now I’ve started Paradiso 17 which from the small bit I’ve read seems to tell of the death of an elderly Palestinian man. More to come on that. I’m not quite certain what I will start next on audio so I’ll fill you in next week.
I’m reading My Husband’s Wife by Alice Feeney. I finished Murder by the Letter by Lisa Pevey (a cozy mystery)
I finished Kindred this morning. Thanks for the recommendation, Kim. Somehow I missed this book awhile ago. Excellent story! I just read the first chapter of Great Big Beautiful Life. Too soon to give an opinion. Also, I gave up on Liar’s Poker. It might be one of 1,000 best and would appeal to business majors wanting an early insight in Wall Street, though. ****
I’m finishing up “Remarkably Bright Creatures” by Shelby Van Pelt for a book discussion next week. I’ve put off reading it since it came out for several reasons but am finding it better than I imagined & it will make for a really good discussion.
I am halfway through “A Flower Traveled In My Blood” by Haley Cohen Gilliland. A non-fiction account of a group of grandmothers searching for the daughters, sons, and grandchildren torn from their homes and off the streets of Argentina by the various military juntas ruling over decades. A story that needs to be told and heard.
I’m glad you enjoyed Kindred, @NanK. My all-time favorite is The Doomsday Book by Connie Willis. It’s not only excellent sci-fi, but stellar historical fiction as well. It’s probably the best time travel book I know of, right up there with The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger.
Oooh, two more excellent sounding nonfiction titles: A Flower In My Blood and The Zorg. Those are both on my list as of this afternoon! Thank you for the recommendations, @Gabi_J and @Anne_Glasgow!
I am reading THE MOUNTAINS WE CALL HOME by Kim Michele Richardson.
I just reviewed THE HOUSE OF HIDDEN LETTERS - loved it.
I also reviewed ACROSS A STARLIT SKY by Susan Shalev - a wonderful historical fiction read.
Last week I finished up a techno-thriller titled Nicholas, about a retired engineer and his friend, an analog AI. They set out to save a group of Inuit individuals in Alaska’s far north from freezing to death due to another hostile AI. Unfortuntely, it was pretty bad - my first two-star book of the year. I feel pretty bad about it, since the author paid us to review the novel, but it is what it is.
Then I moved on to The Moonshine Women for discussion here. Really looking forward to the conversation next week. Someone reported receiving it today, so if you’re on the list for it, you should see it soon.
And then for review I read London Falling by Journalist Patrick Radden Keefe. Absolutely riveting nonfiction. A 19-year-old boy is found dead on the banks of the Thames, and it appears he committed suicide. But as people look into the death more carefully… maybe not. It turns out the kid had a secret life and pretended to be the son of a Russian oligarch. Some dangerous people believed him. Kind of like Anna Delvey, only he didn’t survive his masquerade.
I’m reading Horse by Geraldine Brooks for a bookclub now, and then it’ll be another paid review for an indie author.
In audiobook format, I finished up my 20-hour Expeditionary Force book. (#19? #20? Something like that.) I’ve now moved on to Chain Gang All-Stars thanks to a recommendation here.
I too have read A Flower Traveled in My Blood and it is excellent.
Ok, I was already looking forward to London Falling and now I want to get it in my hands even more.
Let us know how Chain Gang All Stars works for you @kim.kovacs .
Just finished Kin by Tayari Jones - and loved it. I will be thinking of the two girls for a long, long time.
I am reading Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid. I am really enjoying it. I really want to ignore all my responsibilities so I can continue reading.
I absolutely loved Horse and I keep meaning to read more of Geraldine Brooks. I have her book March on my shelf; maybe I should move that closer to the top of the pile. Thank you for the insight on Patrick Radden Keefe’s recent book!
I finished “All the Blues in the Sky” last week and am trying to carve out some time today to finish “Raising Hare.” It is very deep but the parts specific to hares can challenge you a little bit. “The Invention of Charlotte Bronte” is next and I received some great feedback on here encouraging me to give that a try.
Lady Tremaine - a unique version of Cinderella.
Stay for a spell - a princess cursed to live inside a book store!
Wrong place, wrong time by Gillian McAllister - very unique take on time-travel, full of twists and turns (big jaw drop moment just last night!)
Les Miserables.
What did you think of Lady Tremaine, @Marijana_Bankovic? I’ve heard good things about it, and it’s high on my list.
I’m about half-way through, it’s pretty good so far. Doesn’t read like a fairytale, and let’s just say that in this version, Cinderella doesn’t behave like the Cinderella we know - I’ll leave it at that!
