What are you reading this week? And what did you think of last week’s books? (12/18/2025)

Wow, @Lana_Maskus, that looks like an amazing resource. Thanks for sharing!

I’ve had All the Frequent Troubles… on my TBR list for quite awhile. You’ve given me the incentive to pick it up.

Lana,

Yes! I’ve read West With the Night many times. My interest in her life in Africa growing up and her contemporaries there such as Karen Blixen brought me to her story. I will look into the Paula McLain book, thanks. A documentary which, if I recall correctly, was entitled “World Without Walls” is about her and I think I remember her being interviewed in it. She was a fascinating woman!

LOL. I can relate. I’m unsure if I have enough time left on this earth to read 1000 books.

Thanks Kim,
Sometimes the holiday season is overwhelming with decorating, presents to send and the social obligations.
My happy time is snuggling on the sofa reading with my fur babies but that time has been limited lately.
The only book that I haven’t read from your list is All the Lonely People so I will download the book.
Take Care and sending wishes for you to have an enjoyable holiday season.:wrapped_gift:

Just finished Big Lies in a Small Town by Diane Chamberlain. The enjoyed the dual timeline with with an artist and an art restorer. The deep-seated prejudices of the 1940’s gave shape to the plot. I’d stumbled on it while looking for an audio book to borrow from the library, so was well-pleased with my uninformed selection.

Also just finished The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny by Kiran Desai. At 670 pages, it was a bit longer than I’d wanted to get into. I’d say 3/4’s of it was interesting, but I did skim from time to time. I liked the sections that critiqued and contrasted culture in India and the United States. There was a lot to reflect on in the theme of loneliness.

I’ve started Wreck by Catherine Newman. The self-deprecating humor she imparts to her main character lightens the work overall.

My current audio read is Maame by Jessica George. I’m not far in, but it has depth beyond the theme of a-twenty-something-struggling-to-find-herself.

I understand and share your hesitancy about animal gore. Somehow it seems that what human beings do to each other is horrible, but what they do to animals is worse. Knowing that it’s in the book lets me give it a pass. And, I hope nothing happens to the cat.

That was a good book.

I love audio books that bring me the accents and words I’d mispronounce terribly even reading silently to myself. I think I missed some of the texture of The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny with it’s myriad Indian dishes because I read a paper version.

S.A. Cosby’s books can be hard to read with the stacked brutality, but for some reason I still enjoy them.

I found Henry, Himself by Stewart O’Nana feel good book. Perhaps it was because we are both people stacking the years past the seventh decade, or because it was a character driven novel and all I had to do was enjoy Henry’s life as it unspooled before me.

I thought that was a really interesting book

Thanks Robin. I will definitely download your suggestion.

@Robin_G, the bad guy promises the good guy that nothing will happen to the cat; he respects the feline because, like him, the cat’s an efficient hunter. (Of course, I’ve still got three hours to go, and the bad guy isn’t reliable, so we’ll see.)

Now, the fate of various dogs and the buffalo is a different matter. The author isn’t super graphic, but there are a couple of scenes I’m still thinking about… and not in a good way.

I’m listening to the audio of BROKEN COUNTRY.

I’m reading The Girls in the Attic by Marius Gabriel, a WWII story told from the perspective of two young Jewish sisters who are hiding from the Gestapo. A few chapters in and I’m enjoying the thickening plot!

I agree that Time of the Child audiobook was an ideal Christmas ‘listen’!

Did you read This is Happiness ? I haven’t read it yet but it was Niall Williams’ first book about Faha. It is supposed to be excellent.

I just stumbled on 1000 Books to Read today and ordered it. Looks like a fun way to randomly pick a book to read. Not that I need anything more on my shelves or TBR list.

I haven’t read This is Happiness, @Gabi_J, but after seeing it here I just used my one remaining Audible credit to buy it. The all-knowing Google AI says one should read it before Time of the Child, so I guess that’s what I’ll do. I finished The Buffalo Hunter Hunter earlier today so was trying to figure out what my next audio book will be.

Argh… you people are terrible! I’ve now asked for 1000 Books to Read Before You Die for Christmas. (Thanks to Amazon, I suspect there’s still time, if my husband really loves me. Hahaha.)

It seems like that’s one of the few books I’d want a hard copy of.
